Re: Justified (here be major spoilers for the finale)
my tearsmyself. (This cast is fucking ridiculous. I will miss them so much.)I fucking loved it. It was everything I didn't know I wanted; pure perfection. I'm infinitely grateful that this last episode wasn't full of blood and death, and instead focused on character development and emotional resonance.
I know some will feel differently, but I was so, so glad that none of the major players died. (Which is ironic considering the shows recurring use of "You'll never leave Harlan alive".) I've always suspected that Raylan and Boyd would die, either working together one last time or facing off one last time. They would have a moment before they die, acknowledging their strange friendship and/or possible regret that it had to end this way, and that would be that. (While that would've been believable and in character, it also would've been predictable and I think somewhat disappointing.)
But the ending we did get was absolutely beautiful. Boyd got arrested (again), turned back to his faith, trying to once again gather a 'flock' (this made me laugh, because as Raylan said, "You're repeating yourself"; the thing is, you can tell Boyd loves it), Raylan moved, helped raise his daughter, is a (less angry) functional human being but still no good with romantic relationships, and Ava finally, finally got out of Harlan, and gets to live peacefully. All she wanted this season was to stay out of jail, leave Harlan, start over and live a peaceful existence, and that's exactly what she did.
And they're all (reasonably) happy! Ava is raising her kid away from the influence of Boyd (because let's face it, as awesome as Boyd is, he's not the best role model. Ava hasn't always been either, but she's trying to change. It does sadden me that Boyd will most likely never know his child or realize that Ava did indeed 'get out', but at the same time I understand this decision), Boyd is in his element, using that silver tongue of his to gain followers and influence people, adoring the attention, and Raylan doesn't cross that final line (shooting Boyd) but gets his chance to live, away from the place (and people) that caused him so much grief.
Instead of everything ending dramatically, life just went on.
And in that scene between Boyd and Raylan, despite the fact that Boyd is heartbroken (over Ava) and beaten down (it killed me to see him goading Raylan on, lying about getting out of jail and killing him so Raylan would finish the job; I think he had fallen so low at that point that death seemed like the only option, but Boyd is above all a fighter, and I have no doubt he'll make things work, in or out of jail), he keeps on (genuinely) smiling, enjoying Raylan's company and pushing him to talk about his ~feelings~. ("Raylan Givens, I know you have never believed a word that has come out of my mouth, though I have harbored a secret hope that you never the less enjoyed them", plus "After all these long years Raylan Givens, that's the only reason?") I know Boyd and Raylan both have plenty of amazing solo moments, but they're never better than when they're together. There couldn't have been a more fitting and meaningful last line than "We dug coal together."
If you can't already tell, I was SO impressed by this episode, and am delighted that the show went out so strongly. As of right now, I think this is my favorite series finale ever.

Re: Justified (here be major spoilers for the finale)
The thing about Justified is it has some of the best damn writing I've ever seen (every word that comes out of Boyd's mouth is gold, but half the cast have quote worthy lines on a regular basis) and a wonderfully talented cast. (Plus, Olyphant is smokin hot.) The writing is solid all the way through; it never gets bad, though as expected, some periods are better than others. It's very character driven and has (what is possibly) the most charismatic antagonist I've ever seen. (Not in all my years have I ever come across someone who dislikes Boyd. Never. Even when he's shooting people in the face, somehow he stays likable. I think it's one part good writing, one part Walton Goggins being an acting god.)
I highly recommend it! It is a bit on the long side (78 episodes), but imo it is worth every moment.
