In no possible reality was that accidental. Also it was the best thing to happen in S8, and I liked most things in S8.

yeah I'm gonna need a LOT of context for this please

(Anonymous) 2015-04-16 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Tbh I watched the episode and I don't think there's any context that would help

The Doctor is hanging out with Robin Hood, and he doesn't like him, so he flips him off

(Anonymous) 2015-04-16 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
...and they didn't pixelate it? Or it's okay on Brit TV because it's the American gesture? But why would the Doctor flip the American bird at Robin Hood?

...I'm so confused.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-16 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, he doesn't really flip him off, you see, the Doctor is just reaching into his coat pocket for the spoon to battle Robin Hood with and if you watch really carefully you can see the gesture but it's not super obvious. I thought it was an accident too, but look at his face - it's a proper flipping off face.

the spoon to battle Robin Hood with

Eh? Their FX budget get cut again?

No, it's to cut his heart out.

Twelve is so cool he doesn't even need a sword and uses a spoon instead.

I'm pretty sure it's a reference to Peter Capaldi's previous character Malcolm Tucker from the show The Thick of It. He swears a lot in it.

After the magnificence of The Thick of It, I can't help but think PC has gone down in the world a bit.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-16 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Not to say that I enjoyed season 8,but in all fairness, it's a role he's dreamed since he was a child. I'm sure he's doing fine.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
As anon above said, he's loved Doctor Who since he was a child so I think this was a perfect role for him to take.

He is also in a position now where he's well known enough that he has a say in what he takes on and even the way in which his role will go. There have been plenty of rumors that he has a bit of a say in how his Doctor is written (he may not be able to magically create better writers, but he can put his foot down about certain things.)

I'm sure Capaldi will continue to be in demand until he wishes to retire. I loved The Thick of It but that show would have been over regardless.

TToI was awesome, but, to be fair, it did run it's course. Capaldi is a brilliant actor and this was his dream role, so I think he's doing great.

it's obvious they tried to make as many references to malcolm tucker as possible.

iirc, there was an episode where the doctor shows someone the psychic paper and the person sees a bunch of swearing.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 07:49 am (UTC)(link)
LOL, yes, you are correct. It was awesome.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-16 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
The Doctor should have given him the two finger salute. It just seems classier, somehow.

And more archery-related.

This is my favorite recent episode of Who. Robin Hood was a delight.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yes it was a really amusing episode! I think we need more fun stand alone episodes that are in that spirit.

Moffat's overarching plots should take a step back, as much as I appreciate someone trying to tie a plot together I also think it gets in the way of episodes being fun too often.

I don't mind overarching stories at all, but I do think a good standalone episode can be as good as a more heavily story driven one. This is the kind of episode I could watch again and again because it's a great combination of things.

So I agree. I think Who could use more silly/fun episodes (we do get good standalone episodes occasionally, but not a lot of them are that humorous).

(This isn't about Who, but since you mentioned it...) I hate when shows forget that not every episode needs to revolve around the main plot. Sometimes it's nice to do something different.

Text: Twelve flipping Robin Hood off amused me more than it probably should have.

My husband thinks this is just a coincidence, but I don’t believe it for one second.
