Movies that SHOULD be remade

(Anonymous) 2015-04-16 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I think a film is ripe for a remake under two conditions:

1. If its original version just missed being awesome; we got the less-good version of a good story. I.e. Ladyhawke, The Paper.

2. If it's been long enough that an updated version would place the original story in a whole new context in which its basic conflicts could play out in a new way. I.e. Sunset Boulevard, The Conversation.

Admittedly, nothing's guaranteed. Under the second rule, the remake of The Manchurian Candidate should have worked. But I think those are a good jumping-off point, no?

I want a faithful retelling of Dracula. No new visions. No AUs. Just following the book.

+1

I'd also like the same for Frankenstein.

Book is frustratingly stupid tho

Hmmmm my girl started getting really tired all the time and has weird cuts on her neck, wonder what up with that. Well I'm sure it's totally fine and nothing to do with the vampire we're hunting.

YES. The closest we have in recent history is the Francis Ford Coppola version, and that's pretty sad.

Hey, if we're prompting monster-movie remakes, I wanna see a new Phantom of the Opera. The 2004 musical sucked, the 25th anniversary stage-show concert was only serviceable, and dammit, I was so excited back when there were rumors of a French adaptation starring Jeremy Irons. I don't even need 100% faithful to the book, although a version with an actually ugly (as opposed to "look at my horrible acne") Erik, filmed at the Garnier, with costumes by someone like Colleen Atwood (since Eiko Ishioka is dead) would basically ensure I saw it like 50 times. And for fuck's sake, make it about music, and just fucking dub everybody who's supposed to be able to sing.

I want a remake of Little Shop of Horrors that keeps the ending from the stage musical.

I just had this conversation with herpy. The original ending (which the studio execs made them refilm) is in the director's cut.

As much as I'd like to see that it'd also need to be done amazingly well because I LOVE LOVE LOVE the 86 version even with the wrong ending to it.

I still listen to the '86 soundtrack.

I want a version of "War of the Worlds" that's actually set 'in the last years of the nineteenth century'. A live-action version that's based on the Jeff Wayne musical would also be awesome. In both cases, it's mostly because I want a proper Thunderchild sequence. No more modern updates, no modern weapons, I want to see Victorian-era warships taking on alien invaders.

Though please, for the love of gods and little fishes, let them not do a "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" on it.

Under criteria #1, Pontypool. It was so close. If you ever want to watch a movie that is 2/3 AWESOME and 1/3 WTF REALLY?!, watch Pontypool! The first part of it is so, so good-- atmospheric, really spooky and suspenseful. Great use of an claustrophobic location. Certain parts of it are simply chilling.

But the explanation is really kind of dumb, and illogical even beyond the framework established in the film. I don't know, I was a bit disappointed-- and yet, Burgess adapted it from his own novel, so it's not like I can really call it a bad adaptation.

I thought it was a really clever idea and I loved the explanation.

I loved the problem, hated the solution. I'd agree it's a film that's like 85-90% there.

I love Pontypool. Canadian films ftw.

And to be fair, it isn't really any dumber than any other horror film. It's a lot smarter, really.

Eh I want another Secret Garden remake only because I love that story and there hasn't been on since the 90's.

I know there is going to be a Frozen 2 but I'd really rather Disney go back and remake Frozen so that the plot was much tighter and was more towards what it was originally going to be about (a story about the sisters and not a story about one sister and her love interest while the other main character gets pushed to the background.)

I know everyone is sick of Frozen but it seriously had all the ingredients to be a movie I love, and I liked it, but it fell short in so many ways.

I liked The Paper, I think?

Liev!ManchurianM was kind of neat to see having seen the first one; I don't think it was great, exactly, but the two main characters were well played.

Wizard of Oz. I want a live action movie that is actually faithful to the book. And then they can do the other books too.

When Worlds Collide. Classic, awesome scifi movie that would be awesome as a modern movie.

Also, following on that note, Forbidden Planet. This one works on both counts because it is a classic movie that could play out well in a different context and also i think the end could have been more awesome.

Van Helsing where everything is the same except Anna is the MC and Hugh Jackman as Van Helsing is non-existent.

Speaking of Van Helsing, while watching the movie (and trying not to sudoku myself with a rusty nail to end my boredom), the story would work really well as a game too.

Agree wholeheartedly. Would like to propose a third caveat:

Where the technology has caught up enough to let us do better effects.

I've never seen a version of Alice in Wonderland that does justice to the book, and I've seen many, many versions of it, including some really obscure ones.
