I want a faithful retelling of Dracula. No new visions. No AUs. Just following the book.

+1

I'd also like the same for Frankenstein.

I have never seen a Frankenstein where the monster isn't ugly - but rather handsome but with an eerie, uncanny valley quality as he was described in the books. I(d love to see that.

the closest you'll probably get to that is probably I, Frankenstein where Aaron Eckhart makes for a pretty sexy abomination (it's mentioned in the movie that he's sewn together with parts from like eight people but he sure doesn't look like it.)

Interesting, I'll check it out!

before you do, please lower your expectations severely. it was a fun movie but it's hilariously bad (and the cgi...good lord). yvonne strahovski was in it though, so that was a treat

My mom and I got about thirty seconds in when we started going "Wait, what?" at the screen and spent the rest of the movie doing our own Rifftrax, so I heartily recommend watching it with a friend if you can.

Which original elements that often get changed/left out did you want in particular? I mean, as many as possible, probably, but if you had to prioritise. The monster's intelligence, anger and almost-beauty-but-not? The early 19thC Swiss setting? The personal murders and vengeance as opposed to a random rampage? The attempted creation of a bride? The beginning/ending on Captain Walton's ship?

I would give a lot for the ending, actually. I always liked the bleakness to it. A useless death, a vengeance unfulfilled in either direction, a lone, massive figure on the ice sailing towards his own funeral pyre. I always thought it had a poignancy.

Not really on topic, but this makes me wonder why there's no Mary Wollstonecraft biopic

Book is frustratingly stupid tho

Hmmmm my girl started getting really tired all the time and has weird cuts on her neck, wonder what up with that. Well I'm sure it's totally fine and nothing to do with the vampire we're hunting.

Re: Movies that SHOULD be remade

(Anonymous) 2015-04-16 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
that's what makes it so fun though. the movie should also include an incredibly lengthy scene about the dirt that Dracula brought to England from Romania (I honestly can't even remember WHY he needed the dirt, but I feel like I read nearly twenty pages about it)

Vampires in (some) European folklore can only rest/regain strength in their native soil, since it would have been the soil they were buried in before they came back to life, their 'final resting place'. Drac had to bring Transylvanian soil with him so he wouldn't arrive in England an undead insomniac invalid, basically.

ayrt

Ah, there we go. That rings a bell

Re: Movies that SHOULD be remade

(Anonymous) 2015-04-16 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, though, at this point the characters hadn't even heard of vampire lore. It was much more likely she had 'consumption' or TB.

I'm thinking of the later time

with... Mina, not the... first girl?

it's been a while since i read it tbh

Re: Movies that SHOULD be remade

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Lucy is the first girl.

Yeah, you're right, I guess they should have been more on their guard after Lucy TURNED INTO A VAMPIRE AND STARTED DRAINING THE BLOOD OF CHILDREN, but hey. Holding the Idiot Ball to increase the dramatic tension.

Re: Movies that SHOULD be remade

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
It sounds like you haven't read actually read the book. If you're referring to Mina (because when Lucy dies, the main characters have NO knowledge of vampires or vampirism until Lucy falls gravely ill and Van Helsing is summoned, and Jonathan was not present for that), then she doesn't have "cuts on her neck". The fact that she's tired isn't very alarming-- they're ALL tired from trying to track down Dracula, and Mina is dealing both with the death of her closest friend and a recovering invalid husband, so being tired isn't a huge red flag.

Re: Movies that SHOULD be remade

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I've read the book but it was a long time ago, so perhaps I'm misremembering it. I just remember the foreshadowing being far too blatant and also distinctly remarked on by the main characters. Which is not a great combo.

Re: Movies that SHOULD be remade

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 09:00 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt - I read it not too long ago and recall there are definitely hints that something's going on, but they're not like you describe. No marks are ever found on Mina's neck. She has a very vivid, menacing dream that's definitely foreshadowing, but one, considering what she's been through and what materials she's transcribed from Dr. Seward's journal, that's not very strange and two, she doesn't tell anyone about it. She only mentions to Seward that she hasn't been sleeping well and requests a sleeping draught.

None of that is a particularly obvious clue that screams "OMG VAMPIRE!", so you can't really blame the other characters for being stupid. Even with what happened to Lucy, vampirism is still a very new, bizarre experience for everyone except Van Helsing. It's as if you discovered tomorrow that aliens really are visiting earth in flying saucers and have been for centuries in human disguise, and someone calling you stupid because you can't immediately identify one.

Re: Movies that SHOULD be remade

YES. The closest we have in recent history is the Francis Ford Coppola version, and that's pretty sad.

Re: Movies that SHOULD be remade

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
na

That is sad, but I'll cop to loving that movie. It always makes me feel better. Gary Oldman gets his creep on, Keanu Reeves is...Keanu Reeves. It's so great. And dumb as shit. But mostly great

Re: Movies that SHOULD be remade

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT--ugh, Keanu. On the other hand, in-camera special effects! And the costumes! (I would look like a badly upholstered overstuffed couch in any of Mina or Lucy's costumes and I want them anyway. Hell, throw in Dracula's Klimt robe and his 20-yard long trained red dressing gown.) Plus it's just so ott campy it's fun, and the actors are such a grab bag-Cary Elwes and Anthony Hopkins and Tom Waits, all at one go.

Re: Movies that SHOULD be remade

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I enjoyed that too, but it came out over twenty years ago and we haven't had a better version since then, IMO. It's past time for a remake.

Re: Movies that SHOULD be remade

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, if we're prompting monster-movie remakes, I wanna see a new Phantom of the Opera. The 2004 musical sucked, the 25th anniversary stage-show concert was only serviceable, and dammit, I was so excited back when there were rumors of a French adaptation starring Jeremy Irons. I don't even need 100% faithful to the book, although a version with an actually ugly (as opposed to "look at my horrible acne") Erik, filmed at the Garnier, with costumes by someone like Colleen Atwood (since Eiko Ishioka is dead) would basically ensure I saw it like 50 times. And for fuck's sake, make it about music, and just fucking dub everybody who's supposed to be able to sing.

Re: Movies that SHOULD be remade

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
This. Either cast people who can actually sing, or dub it in. I know it's a Thing for actors to want to take some lessons and do it themselves, but come on, this is Phantom of the Opera. You can't fake-learn operatic training in a few months!
