Who expects you to? I've never read a fic and gone, "Man. This author better be reading and commenting on other people's fics!"

not op, but other writers? friends who want you to read their fic? i can think of a lot

Well, yeah but friends expect you to read their crap even if you have never read a fic in your life. Or show your their art. Or watch that youtube video they saw.

There a lot of judgment out there for writers who don't read much fic. A lot. I've never understood why, but I think it's got something to do with the writer who doesn't read any/much fic (for whatever reason) having some kind of superiority complex.

I doubt it's a recent development, but in the past I've gotten a lot of "I loved your fic, will you please read mine?" and it's kind of awkward. Especially when you click and right away you're hit with misspellings and poor grammar all over the place.
