I've written a couple well known fics in my small fandom and really enjoyed the positive feedback. But... I don't really enjoy reading fanfic at all. Not for my primary fandom, not for any fandom. I DON'T KNOW WHY. I feel guilty because people expect me to read/comment actively. I try, but even when the fic is good I struggle to get more than a chapter into it and it feels like I'm being selfish.

Who expects you to? I've never read a fic and gone, "Man. This author better be reading and commenting on other people's fics!"

not op, but other writers? friends who want you to read their fic? i can think of a lot

Well, yeah but friends expect you to read their crap even if you have never read a fic in your life. Or show your their art. Or watch that youtube video they saw.

not mine. i can't be friends with those people

if they keep pushing things at me that i've expressed clear disinterest in, i run in the opposite direction

nor me.

There a lot of judgment out there for writers who don't read much fic. A lot. I've never understood why, but I think it's got something to do with the writer who doesn't read any/much fic (for whatever reason) having some kind of superiority complex.

I doubt it's a recent development, but in the past I've gotten a lot of "I loved your fic, will you please read mine?" and it's kind of awkward. Especially when you click and right away you're hit with misspellings and poor grammar all over the place.

Eh, I think you're fine. I write and seldom read myself. The entire point of why I write is because I don't usually find what I'm looking for anyway, so I just put my version out there and see if anyone else gives a rip.

If it makes you feel better, I'm the opposite - I love to read fic and often comment on fic I like, but I'm rarely motivated to write it (and when I do, it's not very good - not horrible, but pretty mediocre, probably because, y'know, I so rarely ever do it).

It's all good. Do what you like - nobody said you have to read fic, just because you like to write it! I think there are many more readers than writers anyway, so what you're doing is important.

I totally get this. Over the years I've grown incredibly picky about the fics I like and even objectively good fics are often not the fics that I want to read. Most of the time I reread my own fics rather than reading someone else's because my own fics are guaranteed to have things that I enjoy and only things that I enjoy.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-18 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Are you me?

I go through stages. When I first get into a fandom, I read everything. Then, as I start writing, I get pickier and pickier until I'm rejecting almost every fic in favor of just rereading my own. It sounds really awful to admit that though, so I usually end up saying "Oh, I spend so much time writing that I don't have time to read!"

+1

New anon chiming in to say I do this too. I will read thousands of fics when I entire a fandom, but as soon as I decide to write fics, my interest in reading new fic wears off. I will re-read either my own fics or ones I've already read after that point.

*enter, not entire

Silly.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-26 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
I do this as well. I've gotten too damn picky.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-18 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Idk if you're the same way OP, but I've come to the point where I get more enjoyment out of writing my ships rather than reading about them now.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-18 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think that's unusual. I only read fic up until the point I decide to start writing fic for a fandom, and then I abruptly stop being interested in other people's works.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-18 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
OP, do you participate in the fandom in any other way? Or do you just write and post fics?

Reason I'm wondering is there's one such writer in my small fandom. They appear once a year or so, post a fic (usually a very very good one), then disappear again. It's always irked me ever so slightly, and I just realized it's not so much because they don't leave feedback on other people's fics - it's 'cause they don't take part in anything. So it comes across as a bit ... aloof, maybe? (They never respond to any of the glowing comments people leave on their fics, either, which could feed that impression.)

Of course, neither they nor you are obligated to do anything whatsoever. And you're awesome to write and share decent fics "without strings", so to speak. But this was my reaction, so I'm wondering if it could explain some of the reaction you've had.

Not OP, but I do something similar in my fandom spaces. My reason is that I'm not "there" for the fandom per say. I enjoy the source material and I find inspiration and create based on it. If I post things it's usually because I was urged to by a friend because they thought others might enjoy it. Sometimes I post things with the same mindset, but I don't expect anything back or to be that involved in the community aspect of fandom.

I'm sort of the same way. I like writing fic, but for some reason I'm not really into reading fic. I do like some, though.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-18 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
I do the same thing, OP. I don't feel guilty about it, but I do think I'm kind of doing the whole fandom experience thing wrong...

(Anonymous) 2015-04-18 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
I think there are a lot of writers who don't necessarily read as much, OP. It can be for a variety of reasons. For me, it's a combination of not having much time to indulge in fandom therefore I have to choose between writing my own fics or reading other people's, and the fact that I don't want anything I do to be inadvertently influenced by either someone else's stories or by any prevailing myths or trends or characterizations within that particular fandom. I know people judge for it, but frankly I'm in fandom to write more so than I am to read, and I see nothing wrong with that (or with anyone who does the same).

I can't say I've ever been made to feel I have to read and comment on others' work though. My readers seem perfectly fine with having fic to read, none of them have ever made me feel I should be reading/reviewing constantly on top of writing.
