Fandom Reactions to Characters Versus Casual Fans

(Anonymous) 2015-04-17 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you ever noticed that sometimes casual fans perceive character deaths (or other events) differently than really huge fans/fandomers?

SPOILER HARRY POTTER EXAMPLE

For instance, I've found a lot of casual Harry Potter fans really don't see Sirius's death as having been that sad. A few do, but a lot sort of have a "eh, Dumbledore's death was worse" reaction. It's really weird, but my guess is because of all the Sirius fangirl in the HP fandom. Dobby's death seems to have the same response across the board, though.

See that is weird to me. Because the books are from Harry's point of view, so you'd think that even casual fans would feel for Harry at losing a father figure.

DA: Idk about anyone else but the first time I read about Sirius dying I was less sad and more, "What. Did he seriously* just die?"

*har har.

His death felt too quick to me. That was probably the point though idk.

Yes, I think the quick was the point.

I actually cried when I read it. I don't cry most of the time, and I'd already been spoiled. But the combination of Harry's loss and the fact that Sirius had never really had a chance at a post-Azkaban normal life really got to me.

AYRT: Yeah, I get that. Though honestly I was less sad and more pissed off that he never got that second chance at life. I was so frustrated Harry never got to be with Sirius in that way. :(

AYRT - Yeah, same. I think it may be because we actually saw Sirius less than Dumbledore, and he's not an innocent like Dobby. So maybe people thought it sucked for Harry, but maybe couldn't feel much beyond that?

As a filthy casual (in regards to Harry Potter), I can explain why I think that. Dumbledore was in the movie way more. Sirius was just in one right? If he was in more, I don't recall them. And Dobby was sad because he was super innocent. It was like killing a dog in a movie.

For me, Sirius' death just never really connected with me the way Dumbledore's did. It was just too "bloodless" and quick for me to really process it. I spent the last half of Order of the Phoenix thinking that they were going to find some way to fetch Sirius back from wherever he'd been sent to.

Lack of screentime made it less painful as well. Like someone else mentioned, Dumbledore played an important role in all of the books (even, arguably, Deathly Hallows). More than that, I really bought the relationship that he and Harry had. Sirius just didn't spend enough time around Harry, and even when they were together it felt like Sirius was just seeing him as James 2.0. I know that Harry loved him, but it didn't resonate with me, and so his pain at losing him felt more like he was upset about losing a chance at a family / not having to go back to the Dursleys. "What could have been" and not "what was."
