It's strange to me. In almost all cases I just don't understand what relationship there is between a character or series and a flavor of tea.

I'm also not the biggest fan of herbal / flavored teas generally, though, so maybe I'm just not the demo.

Ditto. I have no problem with other people making it or buying it, but I don't really get it. (Then again, like you, I'm not a big tea drinker.)

However I have bought nail polish from official film collections (Hunger Games being one, a Minnie collection, James Bond, etc) so I can't say I've never indulged in this kind of thing.)

I do drink tea on occasion, actually, I just pretty much stick to black tea.

I can see where nail polish is coming from if, especially there's some kind of color scheme from the media in question, or some kind of general style. In the same way that I can see, if there's some work where someone lovingly describes a specific kind of tea, making that a blend (that kind of thing generally interests me way more than almost any other kind of merch or swag). But yeah, I don't have a problem with it, it's just hard to see the connection.

With a good nail collection the colors are fitting. The Minnie ones were obviously all shades of pink and red and the Hunger Games ones were matched up with the outfits/color schemes of the districts.

Maybe I just don't know enough about tea to understand it. (If the media in question mentions tea, that I get.)

I buy both this kind of tea and the kind of merch you describe (the Sephora tie-ins tend to be interesting), so I assume it's just one of those things for people! I have fun seeing what inventions come from tie-in shilling and nerd love, haha.

EDIT: I just realized how hilarious this secret thread is when there's another one today about BPAL. It's a day for nerd merch that's hard to explain!

Ooo, I completely missed the perfume one! You're right, huh.

Sephora has some nice stuff, though I don't go often. (And tend to buy cheaper products in general.) I would have loved to get one of the Disney mirrors or pallets they had a while back but I didn't. (There was a gorgeous fanmade Hobbit eyeshadow I had my eye on a while back too, but again, didn't get it.)

So I guess it's just personal taste! There are def themed cafes and restaurants too, now that I think about it, and I do think it would be fun to experience those, so yea, I'm sort of seeing where the tea thing is coming from now.

Yeah, it's one of those things that probably makes more sense if someone normally buys fan or tie-in merchandise anyway. I've been to one of those cafes in Japan and loved it, although the manga it was based on was all about a cafe anyway. Same with the Square-Enix one. I was always going there to buy CDs and stuff, so I might as well eat the themed food! Their Hi-Potion drink was delicious.

I actually tend to buy indie (series-themed) eyeshadows, too, but the Disney mirrors were the first thing I thought of. I bought the Cinderella and Ariel one because they struck me as very pretty. They're also quite substantial in my palm, so I don't have to worry about dropping them.

It could also depend on where someone's point of fandom origin started. Tie-in merch is very common in Japan, and they still have some of my favorite stuff, even if I consider it very overpriced. This official Sailor Moon umbrella is adorable, and it's just one of the series this group handles: http://www.super-groupies.com/products/detail.php?product_model_id=1034
