Tea is serious business.

It's strange to me. In almost all cases I just don't understand what relationship there is between a character or series and a flavor of tea.

I'm also not the biggest fan of herbal / flavored teas generally, though, so maybe I'm just not the demo.
elaminator: (Hunger Games: Catching Fire - Katniss)

[personal profile] elaminator 2015-04-18 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Ditto. I have no problem with other people making it or buying it, but I don't really get it. (Then again, like you, I'm not a big tea drinker.)

However I have bought nail polish from official film collections (Hunger Games being one, a Minnie collection, James Bond, etc) so I can't say I've never indulged in this kind of thing.)

This bugs me, too. I think it's because, unlike traditional types of fanwork like art and fic, I can't see any obvious craftsmanship or skill that's gone into it (aside from the packaging art). Does it take much skill to invent a tea blend? And then they're making money from it, which brings up the whole shady copyright infringement business.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-18 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
The copyright infringement business annoys me as well. It takes fanart from a being a fun thing into the realms of a dodgy commercial enterprise. I don't want that. Even when artists I like do a fanart tea blend, I won't buy it, and I'm a sucker for stupid flavours of tea.

I have and I will buy original art prints from my favorite fanarts, but that's something else.

Eh, on the one hand, I like seeing unconventional (i.e. not fic or art-related) fanworks. But I don't really get the "fandom tea" thing either... maybe it's because I don't drink tea.

But if it's something they genuinely enjoy doing, and that other people enjoy it just as much, I see no harm or foul in them making teas and whatnot.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-18 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I completely and strongly related to this secret. It's like I made it in my sleep, inspired by moonbeams and angry kittens roaring at me from the bathtub. Thank you.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-18 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I mostly just don't understand it. It mostly feels like an excuse to do graphics for the packaging, but then why not just do graphics? What does tea have to do with anything?

I make my own blend, so it is a little different each time. I can't guarantee the flavour.

I don't mind the existence of fandom teas, but they're not for me. I've been gifted some and didn't like the taste of any of them - I just don't particularly care for cinnamon, sweet potato, hazelnut, etc in my tea,

idgi either. I guess it's fun, but I've looked at a few and most of the time it doesn't sound like people have put a lot of thought into the blend and WHY it's related to fandom.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-18 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
You would have to pry my Perfect Carlos from my cold dead hands to get me to give up fandom tea.

Oh that reminds me that I tried to buy some fan tea a few years back, but the cost of shipping to Canada was too ridiculous for me. I just wanted tasty blends, so I may add well just do it myself.

But also yeah I kinda get you. idgi but at least you get silly fun box art sometimes.

I love tea and tea blands but tbh fandom tea blends have always baffled me and I tend to steer clear.

I wonder if they have tea wars on what tea blend best represents a character?

I've bought a few before (and even made a line for one obscure fandom, which nabbed me some coupon points), but it's just because I like trying tea. I would have spent the exact same money at Teavana/insert other store here, and I am not very exciting about what I like. It tends to be dessert tea.

My Balthier-inspired chai tea is also super delicious. I need to get more once I run out.

My first thought on this was "holy shit fandom tea is a thing?! I must have it!" but then I googled and discovered shipping to Australia is $40+ and so, sadly, it is not meant to be.

Thankyou OP for crushing my poor tea loving heart. *weeps tears of sorrow into her boring old fandomless tea*

;p

I'm not a tea drinker, so instead my mind came up with fandom inspired desserts.

Teen Wolf = Moon Pies (Lydia = Strawberry marshmallow sandwiched between almond butter cookies and covered in a sharp lemon coating, in screaming yellow, of course; Stiles = Reese's peanut butter marshmallow between espresso cookies and covered in dark chocolate; Peter = toasted marshmallow between cashew cookies and covered in a bitter orange and honey coating, etc.)

Due South = BeaverTails (Kowalski = Topped with a coffee glaze and Smarties; Fraser = Topped with a maple glaze and bananas, etc.)

NCIS: New Orleans = Beignets

Hawaii Five-0 = Shaved Ice, of course

ooh, those looks really cool actually

(Anonymous) 2015-04-19 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
I really like it. I get to try flavor combos I might not have thought of before, and I make my own and customize them because I'm fairly picky. I'm not a big fan of most fruit flavors and I'm contact-allergic to cinnamon oil, so it limits my tea adventures quite a bit. Last time I sampled anything at Teavanna the worker swore the company never used cinnamon oil, I still got nasty burns all over my mouth and throat.

Plus I think it's just human nature to enjoy naming/labeling things. I mean candles get named stuff like "Christmas Wreath" instead of "Some fake pine and cinnamon and shit" all the time. If I'm going to enjoy tea I might as well enjoy one called "Rarity" instead of "Spearmint Sparkles" or whatever.

Image: labels for fandom inspired teas

Text: I try to be very live-and-let-live about fandom activities, but of all things, it’s the innocuous fandom-inspired tea blends that irrationally irritate the hell out of me.
