This bugs me, too. I think it's because, unlike traditional types of fanwork like art and fic, I can't see any obvious craftsmanship or skill that's gone into it (aside from the packaging art). Does it take much skill to invent a tea blend? And then they're making money from it, which brings up the whole shady copyright infringement business.

The copyright infringement business annoys me as well. It takes fanart from a being a fun thing into the realms of a dodgy commercial enterprise. I don't want that. Even when artists I like do a fanart tea blend, I won't buy it, and I'm a sucker for stupid flavours of tea.

I have and I will buy original art prints from my favorite fanarts, but that's something else.

I'm confused... you mean to say you buy original art prints from your favorite fanartists (and if so, kudos!) or that you buy prints of your favorite fanarts? (Which... seems to me like the same thing as buying fanart)

Ayrt
I buy prints of original art from artists I get to know through their fanart.

Yeah, I get selling prints (because even professional comic artists do it, too), and to a lesser extent little tchotchkes like acrylic charms and stuff. Hell, I could maybe see someone coming up with a recipe for a fandom-inspire tea for people to put together on their own. But after finding the site shown in the secret? This feels... off.

Plus, any site that sells an unironic Dashcon-inspired tea probably ought to raise a couple red flags.

As far as I know, the whole thing falls under Adagio's general customizable blends, but the business itself is successful enough to be in physical stores. I've wondered before what they do with the one person who actually makes real money off of it. Two of her "lines" are in the secret.

The blenders don't make the money. They're just customized by the site for free. If someone purchases a tea from a user, they get coupon points for the site.

The exception is Cara (pictured twice), because hers were so popular they kept selling out. IIRC they treat her like a freelancer and give her a commission every month. That fanart is also her own work, so you're right about the packaging art!

And it does take some skill to make something drinkable, like any other recipe. I imagine how awful a tea blend could taste if you're not careful brewing it.

Totally irrelevant, but yay Bedknobs and Broomsticks icon! :D

Heck yeah! It's one of my favorites!
