Idk about your country, but in mine it's literally illegal to ask someone their age in a job interview if they're between 18 and 65. So whenever they do (and oh, they do, and try to weasel around it with things like "may I ask" or "what was your grad year" etc.) I always lie to tell them exactly what they want to hear - older if it's a managerial/leadership position, younger if it's not - because even if they find out your real age later, for there to be any consequences they'd have to admit to breaking the law.

I used to not, but then one potential academic supervisor told me he didn't want me because I was "too old" for him (I was 26 at the time, because I'd done a dual degree and internships and taken a year off to help my family through an extremely difficult period) and ever since, fuck it. I'm exactly as old as you want me to be.

I don't put my birth date on my CV, and if you puzzle with my graduation dates I come out 4-5 years younger.

Do your employers ever ask? I've found that just about all of them do, even though - as I said - it's literally illegal. It blows my mind.

I've been asked twice or so, I think. Not sure if it's illegal here, though. Astoundingly, I have been asked the kids question.

I've never been asked the kids question yet, but I figure I just need to give it a couple of years. Even though it's also illegal to discriminate based on parental status. Hurray!

I mentioned because I know for a fact that's illegal here, too.

Well, honestly, in that case, fuck 'em. Don't lie about credentials because that can get you in legit trouble, but fudge, fudge away, and lie about everything else.

/bitter, even though I did get hired by an even better supervisor later on ughhhh

Where I am, or at least in my profession, listing age/birthdate on a CV generally isn't done (and it looks weird when you do) but when I see a CV that leaves off graduation/degree completion dates, that immediately screams "I worry you'd think I'm too old." I really don't care about people's ages as long as they can physically do the work and won't get cranky and condescending about having younger co-workers or supervisors, so it irritates me when people get cagey about their age on a CV. It also makes the CV look incomplete and like you might be hiding other things and trying to make it harder to check if you really earned that degree or worked at that place.

Other professions may be different, so YMMV.

No, I think you misunderstood - I do put the graduation dates on. But the graduation dates without context would imply I'm younger than I am.
