Re: rich people stories

I suspect most of fandomsecrets would call my family richies, though we're not 1%-ers. More like 5%-ers, or possibly 8%-ers.

It means my mom can have in-home carers and physical therapists, and a doctor who makes house calls; that she and my dad don't have to give up their house; and that she doesn't have to stay in the nursing home where she was so depressed she was practically starving herself to death. (And it was a nice nursing home, as such places go.)

I don't begrudge you any of that.

What I begrudge is that we live in a society where you need to be in the upmost of the upper crust to avoid that. I'm glad your mom and dad didn't have to give up their house, that your mom can have a good attentive standard of medical care, that she's in a place where she's loved. But it drives me furious that people who are poorer do have give up their houses, that they don't have access to a good attentive standard of medical care, that they're stuck in grim depressing nursing homes.

On top of that, in a scary number of care facilities, the people (mostly women) who do the bulk of the hard work of patient care are poorly paid and unfairly treated. It's horrible all around.

How much money is 5% or 8%? I cannot keep track of what amount of money qualifies as what percent and get confused whenever these topics come up. :(

What the anon above me said.

Honestly, most of the time when it comes to those issues it's not the people lucky enough to be able to afford that most people are upset with. It's that, for most of us, we live in a society where we would have to leave our parents in the nursing home, give up our home or who knows what else.
