Inglourious Basterds / Harry Potter

Inglourious Basterds would've made a much better TV mini-series than it did movie, and I love that movie.

Also, same for Harry Potter. When adapting most book series I think a TV series would do a better job than a movie, or even a series of movies.

With regards to Harry Potter, I think that's especially true given how many minor characters there were. That's much harder to work with in a single film. And while I realize some minor characters were missed more by fandom than anything else, there were also important things that had to be left out later on, or didn't make sense.

Though I don't know if I could watch entire episodes dedicated to Ron and Hermione's fight in PoA. It's annoying enough to read in the book.

The minor characters, and also I think the movies miss out on a lot of the more 'normal' stuff in the Wizarding World and Hogwarts - just little worldbuilding things I'd have loved to see more of. Also, can you imagine getting to know Cedric more before they killed him off? That could've been a huge punch to the gut.

...I think some editorial discretion is allowed.

I think Potter could have been a few miniseries, I think as a TV show it might have lost the thread.

I still prefer the BBC Narnia adaptations over the big budget movies.

I disagree on IB.

It was a bit stretched, as it was. It would not have benefited by being extended.

Ah, you think? I really would've liked more backstory for the Basterds, and also Shoshanna in particular.

I think that would have hurt it significantly, personally. It's helped a lot by being relatively lean (there's a few scenes I thought could be cut, or cut down, but it's mostly good, there) and leaning mostly on plot, rather than character.

Fair enough! Didn't expect everyone to agree.
