What are some things you think would've worked better in another medium? (i.e. Movie versus show, book series versus TV show, TV show versus book series...)

Might be helpful to name the show/movie/etc in the subject title.

World War Z

World War Z would make an amazing TV series on like HBO or AMC. Also, that movie was an abomination. But even if it was not, a movie is just not the right medium at all.

I think it'd make a good mini-series, in particular! You know, like those sort of documentary mini-series that involve interviews and found footage and stuff? That actually could've been really cool!

Oh god, this would have been PERFECT, as the book was written that way itself.

I think it wasn't a bad movie, but it shouldn't have been called World War Z.

Given the format of the book, I agree, a TV series would have been better.

I liked that movie. Never read the book.

I just liked the atmosphere and how they used that to make things scary instead of gore. That film had me questioning shadows for a week afterward. Not to mention some zombie dreams a few nights as well.

The seventh season of Parks and Recreation

(Anonymous) 2015-04-20 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I love this show overall, but I sort of think the last season of Parks and Rec, or at least the final episode, would've worked better as a movie. It definitely had a movie vibe to begin with. Season six was the last hurrah, season seven tie up a few loose ends and gave us a few glimpses into the future.

Inglourious Basterds / Harry Potter

[personal profile] praetorian_guard 2015-04-20 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Inglourious Basterds would've made a much better TV mini-series than it did movie, and I love that movie.

Also, same for Harry Potter. When adapting most book series I think a TV series would do a better job than a movie, or even a series of movies.

Re: Inglourious Basterds / Harry Potter

(Anonymous) 2015-04-20 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
With regards to Harry Potter, I think that's especially true given how many minor characters there were. That's much harder to work with in a single film. And while I realize some minor characters were missed more by fandom than anything else, there were also important things that had to be left out later on, or didn't make sense.

Though I don't know if I could watch entire episodes dedicated to Ron and Hermione's fight in PoA. It's annoying enough to read in the book.

I disagree on IB.

It was a bit stretched, as it was. It would not have benefited by being extended.

John Wick. TV series with a full cast of all the other assassins in the hotel.

I for one would love a GOT-style Silmarillion miniseries. Not that it would be better than the book, mind you. But I think it is a better idea than a movie, even though the effects necessarily wouldn't be as good.

Also, as someone else suggested on another post, a Wizard of Oz tv series (a faithful one) would be awesome. Each season could be one of the books.

Frankenstein

(Anonymous) 2015-04-20 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I think Frankenstein would work better as a mini-series than a movie (not that any of the movies have tried to get it remotely accurate anyway).

I've never seen the Diving Bell and the Butterfly movie, but I'll bet it'd be WONDERFUL as a surrealistic shortish animation, maybe twenty minutes long. You could have the "real world" happenings in a more desaturated, realistic looking style, while the author's thoughts and imagination could be colorful and more fluid and exaggerated!

Jupiter Ascending, to me, seems like it would have worked better as like a television or Netflix mini-series rather than a movie. It has some fascinating lore (imo), but the fact it's a 2+ hour movie kind of kills my proverbial worldbuilding boner. D;

Animorphs would have been a much, much better animated series than the live-action one we got. Still holding out hope for a cartoon adaptation someday.

(The books are still amazing, though.)

Once Upon a Time should have been a miniseries rather then a dragged out mess.

I actually think a lot of things should be miniseries, either movies that don't have enough time to tell a story or shows that either drag on or don't have a clear direction because they're not sure if they'll continue. I'd love if we had more quality mini series where we get a bit more then a movie and just enough time to tell the beginning middle and end of a story.

THIS. I agree with you completely.

I've been meaning to order all the flashbacks, just to see how much of a mess it is. I rewatched season 1 recently and I'm pretty sure I found several plot holes.

Still I enjoy it (for the most part), even though this Author arc really isn't helping it distinguish itself form Fables.

Percy Jackson - Vampire's Assistant - should have been TV shows. Put the latter on FX.

The Cirque Du Freak saga would have made an amazing tv series! With maybe two or three episodes per book (depending on the book), instead of the jumbled mess that the Vampire Assistant movie was

I'd like a well made Les Misérables TV-miniseries. The book version, not the musical. There have been several (book-based) movies and they are all terrible.

I also think that in the right hands, the The Dark is Rising sequence would make a great TV-series.

And since Peter Jackson apparently has the film rights to the Temeraire books, I wish there'd be a TV-series based on it and not movies (if there ever will be any sort of filming at all).

Oh! And I forgot about it but since I've seen it brought up by some people: While I understand that people want a (live action) movie version of the Wicked musical, I think it would work best in animated form.

Les Miserables:
There's the one with Gerard Depardieu as Valjean and John Malkovich as Javert that wasn't half bad.
