(Anonymous) 2015-04-20 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)Anyways, a ton of books I love are pretty obscure simply because...well. Books.
Probably the one I'd be most interested in exploring fandom wise is Animist by Eve Forward [of Villains by Necessity fame] since the world building is amazing, and sounds like it would be epic to explore.
Sadly, outside of my immediate family, I've never found anyone else whose even heard of it, much less read it.

But I posted about Repo Man on the first page and I guess that counts. It's fantastic, everyone go watch it. It's this slightly surreal, slightly comedic movie about Emilio Estevez as an LA punk who becomes a repo man, and also there's a car with a trunk full of aliens that a bunch of people are hunting. It just has this lo-fi, grungy vibe + some really good, funny black comedy and a lot of awesome punk music on the sound track.
Also, I've mentioned RA Lafferty on here before but whatever he's pretty obscure and I love his work. Unfortunately it's mostly impossible to find as it's almost all out of print (except for the volume of short stories they actually put out a year ago). Another writer I love who most people don't seem to talk much about is James Blaylock. It seems like, if people have read him, they've mostly read his steampunk stuff. But what I love is his more contemporary stuff, which is set in this really dreamlike, awesome, bizarre version of coastal California that just really works for me.
Anyway that is some stuff that I like that I guess is kinda obscure.

If I may drop a recommendation, he also likes The First North Americans: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_North_Americans

Also, the sci-fi short film Pumzi. It's so good! It left me with so many questions! Nobody I know has watched it! Alas.
And then there is Nelvana of the Northern Lights - well, love is not quite the right word for it. I love Nelvana as a superhero concept, but the actual comic is very, very dated in the way that golden age comics usually are.

Even more obscure would be a certain series of Vocaloid songs. Literally the only people who know about it are those I linked it to.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)also- are my eyes deceiving me or is that ibuki in your icon? i guess cfv would be *my* obscure fandom. not on an international level since it's pretty popular in the us and various other countries, but my country has only like a handful of cfv fans. most of them quit the show after or while link joker aired, too, because they didn't like that aichi wasn't the main character (in a sense) anymore. the fact that i don't ship the fandom's favorite bl ship doesn't make me any more 'befriend-worthy' either, i guess :( (even though i ship A LOT but just not *that* ship.. still my fatal flaw, apparently, haha)

There are other people who like that book, but there's a lot of "Ugh no, I had to read that in school and it was so booooring" as well.
There is a bit of a fandom in my country but it's mostly made up of people's school writing assignments and badfic based on that abomination of a movie they made a few years back.
