I happened to be born into a rich country and I happened to be born male and white in a culture that privileges male-ness and white-ness. And I write in English, Hank, which is a massive advantage, I mean YA writers writing in Latvian, even those far more talented than I am, rarely find broad audiences.

And if you watch back far enough, you'll realize it isn't fake humility. This is the guy who spent an entire video forcing himself to get on a small table to win a bet due to his fear of heights. He has anxiety, OCD and depression, and talks a lot about how hard it is to go to public events and how being famous makes him feel weirdly objectified in a recent video.
And he'll be the first to boost up a female YA author, and say his work isn't perfect, so the "savior of YA" is what other people have attributed to him. Maureen Johnson, Sarah Dessen, Rainbow Rowell, JK Rowling and Lauren Myracle are just some of the female authors I've seen him praise recently.
I mean, you don't have to love his books. Though I'd wonder at anyone who thought his educational and charitable work was somehow suspect, especially if they were blaming him for things he hasn't done would never do.
