Wow. A human being who screws up occasionally. I can see why Tumblr would hate him.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-20 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
he's always been fucking annoying to me.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-20 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Ehhh, he's tolerable, if a bit pretentious at times.

Sorry, can't get over the Anne Frank thing. Understand why people like him, don't mind (not like he's murdered someone) but he's not for me.

Anne Frank thing?

I think his writing is really annoying. Like, that scene in Our Fault in the Stars where the protagonists make out in Anne Frank's house and people applaud them still cracks me the fuck up with its stupidity especially the line "she would probably like nothing more than for her home to have become a place where the young and irreparably broken sink into love." ANNE FRANK WOULD NOT GIVE A SINGLE SHIT THAT TWO TEENAGERS ARE MACKING IN HER HOUSE

I do like a lot of the youtube videos that he and his brother put out though, so that puts him a little bit more in my good graces

(Anonymous) 2015-04-20 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Always attribute things like this to stupidity rather than malice.

I don't in any way think Green was trying to tarnish Anne Frank or downplay her. I think he was trying to be ~profound~ and just ended up looking idiotic.

I don't hate him with the intensity of a thousand fiery suns, but I never really saw what the fuss was all about, regarding his works. I was meh about "The Fault is in Our Stars," meh about "Looking for Alaska," hated, hated "Paper Houses," and couldn't finish "An Abundance of Katherines." He's just too in love with the Manic Pixie Dream Girl trope. He claims he's deconstructing it, but if that's the case, he does a terrible job at it. Unless deconstructing now means "playing it completely straight with no sense of irony and no one pointing out what an awful person said MPDG is." I swear I've never been in favor of violence against women but the only reason I made it to the end of "Paper Houses" was because I was hoping someone would smack Margo and call her on her bullshit. The way the book is written, we're supposed to find her lying and vandalism and destructive behavior funny and charming, but I kept thinking of her parents and all the people who have to clean up after her shit.

Nah, Anne Frank probably would think that was romantic. People pedestal her and forget that she was a normal girl who thought about those kinds of things.

He single-handedly kept my kids -- who have been educated mostly in International schools abroad where (*gasp*) they don't actually teach American history -- from failing out of the school due to flunking social studies, and made me laugh so hard I snorted wine out of my nose on numerous occasions. I really don't care what tumblr SJWs say, in my mind he's pretty much "the crash-course history guy" and can do no wrong.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-20 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to really like TFIOS, but after all the tumblr wank and seeing how he is on twitter (his fake modesty makes me vomit), I can't stand it. The crap movie didn't help it though and I think I'll hate him most for making me sit through two hours of the most derp faced MC's.

All I know of John Green is from his Vlogbrothers and Crash Course YouTube channels and all things said, he seems like a decent guy.

That being said, considering his novels I can see why people hate him. For me though, no one is perfect.

nobody is perfect, and even if they were people's idea of "perfect" changes so constantly no one can keep up. yeah he messes up, but i think he's a genuinely good person. I love crash course and he's helped raise a lot of money for charity.
i wish people wouldn't worship someone or act like they need to be thrown into the pits of hell. sometimes a guy is just a guy.

I'm inclined to agree. While I think some of the people who complain about him have a point, I also don't think he's the Worst White Guy ever. I don't excuse his mistakes but, I think he fails on being a Truly Shit Human Being. The Anne Frank thing seems to be right up there with his out-of-touch, annoying pretentiousness that pervades his writing. I'm not a fan of his novels, but he often has interesting things to say. John also does make some effort to teach history and literature on YouTube that is pretty anti-imperialist and fairly feminist. He has a gift for explaining complicated current issues very clearly.

I think he's somewhere in the middle on a lot of issues, neither right, nor very far left. He's a very smart guy who screws up. Nothing about this is remarkable to me. He has some stuff to work on and it doesn't make him much better or worse than a lot of people.

Most of what tumblr levels against him is due to poor research. I know, hard to believe from tumblr, which is always the bastion of accuracy.

I happened to be born into a rich country and I happened to be born male and white in a culture that privileges male-ness and white-ness. And I write in English, Hank, which is a massive advantage, I mean YA writers writing in Latvian, even those far more talented than I am, rarely find broad audiences.

And if you watch back far enough, you'll realize it isn't fake humility. This is the guy who spent an entire video forcing himself to get on a small table to win a bet due to his fear of heights. He has anxiety, OCD and depression, and talks a lot about how hard it is to go to public events and how being famous makes him feel weirdly objectified in a recent video.

And he'll be the first to boost up a female YA author, and say his work isn't perfect, so the "savior of YA" is what other people have attributed to him. Maureen Johnson, Sarah Dessen, Rainbow Rowell, JK Rowling and Lauren Myracle are just some of the female authors I've seen him praise recently.

I mean, you don't have to love his books. Though I'd wonder at anyone who thought his educational and charitable work was somehow suspect, especially if they were blaming him for things he hasn't done would never do.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
I like him, genuinely. He seems like a nice guy. I also like his books, but didn't like A Fault in Our Stars all that much. I'm excited to watch Paper Towns, though. And, that's my $.02.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
I've never read his books, but I love his YouTube stuff. YouTube educational content is the best and I can't even describe why.

I have no real opinion of him, but the two might be feeding each other.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
When something/someone gets popular, some people who dislike begin to dislike more because others like it/them so much and won't shut up about their liking (and some who were indifferent also get annoyed by this), so the people who dislike go looking for things to tear it down and justify their dislike, becoming more entrenched in their dislike. And some people who like it/them feel the need to defend what they like from those who dislike and go into all the reasons why they like in exhaustive detail to build it up and justify their like, becoming more entrenched. Then they feed on each other in some weird feedback loop, goading each other to their respective extremes. This happens in a lot of things.

Image: John Green

Text: I think he’s simultaneously unjustly hated and put on a pedestal

I think most of the hate he gets (that isn’t people simply not liking his books and not understanding his popularity) is a little unwarranted. He has fucked up a couple times, but he’s some people act like he’s the personification of white, straight male privilege and walks around twirling his moustache and thinking about how he can steal candy from minorities

But some peole who defend him act like he is the most progressive history in the history of ever and some kind of nerdy messiah who is the only man who can save this trash earth

I think he seems like a decent, cool guy.

I’d like to each pizza with him and have interesting conversation.

Yeah, pretty much.

I love that everyone has to have a tl;dr opinion on John Green, even the people who don't really care one way or the other.

I'm a Hank fan so I like how often he talks about how amazing his brother is, hows that?
