It's easier now that there's groups. The comment section on them is usually theme relevant (if you're in a Pokemon group, people will be talking about Pokemon stuff on the group's comment section.)

Honestly, OP, in these matters much less depends on the platform or environment than on the particular people involved. Especially if the fandom is small and/or attracts a very specific demographic. I know I've had some wonderful discussions on tumblr, and in general the tumblr section of my main fandom is an amazing place with amazing people.

Since a lot of people have left DeviantArt for Tumblr, some places on the site have gotten better, amazingly.
