It's like the opposite of a disclaimer

If it's saying that liking something problematic makes you problematic - which I don't think it's saying, but just taking that reading at face level - then the unspoken codicil is "but goddamit I love it anyway"

But something problematic =/= trash.

And people use it in other ways (such as to be self-deprecating about their fic or fanart) and so it carries negative connotations.

I just don't like it, personally. I don't like trash. I like things that might have problematic elements, but those elements often make them interesting. And I'm not going to downplay that.

I'm not gonna get on anyone's case about it.

But if anyone ever tries to tell me that I'm trash for liking something, my response will be more along the lines of, "Fuck you. Go ahead and ship your boring shit. I'm intelligent enough to differentiate fiction from reality and I like INTERESTING relationships."

I know it's a pretty strong reaction, but this is just a pet peeve of mine.

But that is not what OP is saying. These are people TELLING THEMSELVES they are trash for liking something, in a humorous/self-deprecating way, like "god this is wrong/I'm in too deep BUT I DON'T CARE! I'M GONNA OWN IT!!"

It means something totally different when you tell a stranger they're trash for liking something (unless it's an inside joke or w/e)

Yep, that's the way I've always seen it used too.

"Trash" is basically the next step up in terminology from "Too many feels."
