Six nominations in one year, a new record. He didn't "engineer it," strictly speaking--the campaign was organized by Vox Day, that guy who got kicked out of the SFWA after using the official Twitter to spew racist insults at a black writer. There was also a campaign by Brad Torgersen and Larry Correia, which competed with them/inspired them/invited them to help game the system, depending on who you believe. George R.R. Martin has been writing a lot about it on his blog.

AYRT

So, question: Has SFWA now withdrawn all the nominations/nominees completely? Or is it too close to WorldCon to do that now?

Apparently, this was within the rules: http://whatever.scalzi.com/2015/04/04/a-note-about-the-hugo-nominations-this-year/

One person refused the nomination, and three withdrew after being nominated. A fourth is attempting to withdraw, but it's past the deadline to do so. There's also a pretty big campaign to vote No Award in the impacted categories.

AYRT thanks for the info.

That's a bit of relief; hopefully the campaign succeeds. This "Vox Day" character (Or is this a sock of the Wright guy??) did pretty much the one thing that's not supposed to be done when it comes to the Hugos. Regardless if there's a loophole or not. I certainly don't trust Scalzi's word that there is, or that logrolling was somehow within the rules.

After reading the other thread (again) I'm the nonnie who commented, "The '80s called they want Niven and Pournelle's love-child back" the first time this came up LOL.

Vox Day is the pseudonym of Theodore Beale.

man Vox Day is so much worse than that

He's basically a fundamentalist anti-woman nrx bigot who, from his actions, seems like he would be pretty okay with destroying the SFWA as a whole because it's too leftist and 'cultural marxist'

In fairness to him, he's not the only one who organized the logrolling. Otoh, the fact that the other organizers essentially brought him in, and talked about how he's a 'gentleman', and AFAIK are still making excuses for him (correct me if I'm wrong on that) is one of the things that personally infuriates me most about the whole situation.

I think they said something about how Vox Day got in trouble for saying racist things out of frustration at someone who'd been saying racist things for years. I'm not exactly an expert on N.K. Jemisin's work, but I don't recall her ever saying shit as awful as the stuff Vox Day has said. (They're finally trying to back away from him, but all the stuff they're deleting is still Google cached.)

Re: OP

That line would hold a lot more weight with me if Vox Day wasn't ESSENTIALLY A FUCKING WHITE SUPREMACIST JESUS CHRIST

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
This. He straight up said that a Jemisin (a black author) was a half savage and inferior because of genetics. He's a racist loon and I wouldn't believe him if he said the sun was going to rise tomorrow.

He also regrets not punching Terry Pratchett in the face for talking about right to die. Literally, regrets not "striking him down."

Has SFWA now withdrawn all the nominations/nominees completely?

Quick clarifying note: WSFS (World Science Fiction Society) is the organization responsible for the Hugos and Worldcon; SFWA does the Nebulas.

I'm not sure how you know him, but he's probably the Vox you're thinking of. http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Theodore_Beale
