OP here

But why would you use the word "trash" then? Why not use the word ridiculous or goofy? Why make a value judgement? I swear it's like a something that came from someone legit self-hating for not being real world productive enough and somehow it spiraled in a huge self hate meme.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't understand why you think trash is this horrible word that is somehow more offensive then ridiculous or goofy. Wouldn't ridiculous or goofy be just as insulting to certain ships or pieces of media? If I took a show super seriously I could be just as insulted with people calling it "goofy."

You're taking this too literally and too personally, people are just joking around. It's not a self-hate thing. Ignore it and leave them be.

NAYRT

"Trash" has a lot of really negative connotations.

For example, when celebrities say misogynistic things, I've often heard them referred to as trash.

So I can see why it would bother OP.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
But OP is saying "why make a value judgement" while still using words that have value judgements behind them.

A word can have negative connotations and still be used in a lighthearted manner.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It can be REALLY hard to tell how light-hearted something is meant though online.

Plus, when you've been attacked for liking something, it's not fun to read light-hearted jabs.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
That's even more of a reason to not take everything online seriously and to be careful about what you do take issue with. The internet is full of trolls who are out specifically to mess with people who take things literally.

If someone is attacked for liking something that's horrible, but it's hardly the fault of someone who is making fun of a tv show they like. Especially when they are doing it to make fun of themself and not anyone else.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
Even if they're not being light-hearted, they're doing it to THEMSELVES. What business is it of yours, then?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not self-hate

You use that word instead of the other for all the reasons that anyone ever chooses one word over another

but that is what it means

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
1. All of those are value judgments.

2. Seriously?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
the only reason that it's self-hate is because you've decided that it's a self-hating value judgment

that's it

that's all that's going on

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Idk is it a cultural thing where people use "trash" to without the connotations of valueless, useless, gross? Like sure ridiculous might be a value judgement too but not the same negative level.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, those are the connotations, but the context makes it clear that they're not seriously being applied in that way

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

That's the whole point of self-deprecating humor though? That you put yourself down excessively, and the dissonance between reality and the disparagement makes the joke funny?

Take the "human disaster" meme, for instance. Is it a cultural thing where people use "disaster" without the connotations of, well, a disaster?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
There was a time where "bad" was slang for "good."

I mean, fuck, people, language isn't that simplistic.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
The words ridiculous and goofy also have value judgments behind them...

Honestly, I'd be more insulted by hearing people call the thing I love "ridiculous" than I would hearing "trash" purely because the usage of "trash" in that context has been co-opted to mean something positive, even something that means you're part of a community of likeminded people.

I can't see any positive spin you can put on "ridiculous."

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 12:03 pm (UTC)(link)
NA

I'm guessing this must be certain fandoms specific or something. Everyone keeps claiming it's positive in their circles, but in mine, it's used to mean garbage. The most positive spin I've seen is "This is objectively garbage, and you can like it if you want but you better admit it's garbage."
