Maybe it's purposely vague to give you as much latitude as possible? Basically, why this topic is important and what further questions does the current research raise for future research?

I'm in the same boat with a paper I've put off way too long, so I have every sympathy. Only the topic isn't vague--it's just so ridiculously complicated I don't know what end of it to take hold of. And my instructor helpfully says "Don't overcomplicate this." AAAAAAUUUGGGHHHH.

Yeah that's what I'm going with, I'm just the sort of person who likes to be told what to do instead of being left to decide a topic myself haha.

Noo that's so bad, like "don't overcomplicate this" ok let me just turn off my mind then! What class is it for?

It's for an environmental science class--a joint paper/presentation on nutrient enrichment and remediation in Chesapeake Bay. And I know I have an honest-to-god habit of needlessly overcomplicating stuff...but yeah, telling me "don't overcomplicate this" just makes me panic.

The thing about your friends and the big family dinners you do together makes me nostalgic for a similar dining club my ex-boyfriend had going with a bunch of his friends. They had got to know each other while working together to restore a big old Victorian house that they all lived in at the time, but even after they had all moved to other parts of town, they kept the dining club, which they called "Mom's Meal," going for years. It might mean formalizing some aspects of it which are probably kind of tacit now, but you and your friends might be able to keep your family dinners going too. The dinners were fun--several of these people were pretty sophisticated cooks, but Mom's Meal was all about serving something not sophisticated, like pot roast or spaghetti and meatballs or tuna casserole that their mothers might have put on the table. Their little community was a stress-reliever for them, and it lasted about as long as most of the core members still lived in Des Moines (or still lived--there were a couple of tragic, early deaths).
