"Soulmates" AUs

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
What's your favorite kind, or what's the most interesting way you've seen this be done?

If you hate soulmates AUs and absolutely need to inform everyone of it, you can do that too, I guess. Like-or-not isn't really the point though.

I do have a thing for having the name of your soulmate on your body (and all variations of that).

I like romantic soulmates, and when the trope is played straight (so not an inversion or deconstruction).

I wasn't a fan of them, but I've read a few. I liked one that was body-resonance. The concept actually seemed plausible to me.

I've also read a "name is written on you at birth" one, but it wasnt just names that could appear, it could be dates and such as well. I liked that the mark wasn't so specific limited.

Tbh, I don't know that much about these AUs because I find the idea rather too sappy for my fic reading preferences.

I love all the soulmate AUs.

The name on your body OR first words are great. I read one REALLY interesting Sherlock soulmate name AU.

Harry Potter usually has some interesting arranged marriage and soulmate AUs, some of which are good and some, not so much. I can't think of any specifically off the top of my head at the moment that I love.

I don't read a lot of these, but that's mostly because they're all romantic. I wouldn't mind reading a gen soulmate AU, given that the topic would be handled carefully. The "soulmate's name written on your skin" and the "you can feel your soulmate by touch" types sound like they could be nice.

Types I've read:
- you see them in your dreams until you meet them
- everything is black and white until you meet them
- their signatures are written on each other somewhere
- sentinel & guide

I like the "you're missing a sense unless you're with them" type, makes it interesting, more so if the sense is related to characters' personalities

My fave kind is the one where they recognise this person is their soul mate and decides they don't need the person as anything other than a friend and sticks with it.

I've seen a few of these and they were quite good. I don't mind the more common 'the two meet, they get together and live happily ever after' type fics, but it's a nice change. (If anyone who comes across this comment cares about a short Kagami/Kuroko fic where Kuroko and Kagami aren't soulmates let me know and I'll link you.)

I think I find both the "someone out there for you" appealing but I also find independence and choice very appealing so I guess I like the stories that explore someone making the choice - especially since soulmate AUs have the culture built around soulmates and it's regarded as odd not to be with them.

Also AUs where two ppl who are not "designated doulmates" get together and STICK together !
(Can also apply to abo with alpha/alpha or beta/beta or omega/omega)

IA, in a fictional culture where everyone is meant to do a certain thing and live a certain way it's always interesting to see an act of rebellion. Screw fate, do what you want, be with who you love!

I love love love love love soulmate AUs, I don't even care how cheesy they are, they're like crack for me

My favorite common variation is the "first thing the person says to you" version, because I just feel like there's a ton more scope for variety and also for delicious tension and angst. It's just more interesting. But I also like any other kind.

One less common variant I liked is there's a couple fics (particularly POI Shaw/Root stuff) where it's the person's SSI number, which is both interesting and v v fandom appropriate for POI.

I remember an Eruri fic on SnK where they went through various reencarnations (there was age difference, napoleonic wars, etc), and every time they found each other they would remember who they where in their previous wars. It was a pretty interesting take on it.

I'm a sucker for any kind of soulmates story, really. I love the it from "we might have met before but I can't spot where exactly" to "we couldn't be together in a previous life, but this time we can make things better" stuff.

Not an AU, but I liked how the soulmate thing was handled in Hotel Transylvania (stupid name aside...) They had similar dreams and plans and it wasn't just a 'omg this hot guy with no personality is like my destined boyfriend just because'

I love them, though I like the ones where there's some conflict about the issue [family doesn't approve/one or both decide to try to fight/etc] before getting to a happy ending.

I'm iffy on them. A lot of them tend to be really angsty for whatever reason.

One variation I do tend to like is the kind where one person gets a vision of the future (time travel, scrying, however) where they find out their future self is in love with Other Person. Especially if it's two characters who don't get along, or haven't met and when they meet don't get along at first. And the rest of the story is about how they hook up.

I think it adds sort of a fun twist to the normal 'how they hook up' story, because one person already knows it's going to happen but doesn't understand how.

I can't help think I'm harping on something that may bug some folk who recall when I couldn't keep from mentioning it all the time, but Valandhir's "The Raven's Blade" really got me originally because it had a great example of a soulbond that was totally platonic. (The RP she and I play is definitely not platonic though.)

The other factor about that series reflects on a tendency in soulmate fics I dislike - the idea that the soulbond influences the bonded pair into loving each other. I don't really like the idea that a soulbond will do that, I prefer to see attempts to show the characters falling in love like normal relationships, only maybe with another avenue of communication available due to the bond.

Despite this peeve, I do like soulbond AUs, I am just a bit picky about them.

Since a lot of the other comments are about soulmate concepts that have some kind of instant recognition deus ex machina going on, I feel I should elaborate on the mechanism in RB.

Basically "oath bonds" are caused when one person saves the life of another, creating an empathic link, linking the bondmates' lives so the shorter-lived one will have their aging slowed, but if one gets killed, the other will also die. It is possible to break the bond so if one partner is dying, they can prevent the other dying with them.

Oath bonds do not have to be romantic, though Valandhir and I RP romance plots that include things like destined love and psychic communication, like sharing emotions and even sharing "mindscapes" where they can see each other's "soulforms".
