Cross-stitching is the best, and unlike other hobbies, there's very little overhead for the initial supplies you need. I've done knitting and cross-stitch and cross-stitch is way easier to get into, because the supplies cost so little (whereas knitting, you want some pretty, pretty yarn, you gotta lay out the big bucks.) Some easy patterns to start with are the Wee Little Stitches ones (bonus points for nerdy adorableness!)
