Re: Fandoms you keep meaning to check out but haven't

As someone who doesn't keep up with anime/manga much anymore and has made an effort to do so for sports animanga (a few, anyway), I have to say if you don't care about the power of friendship...they are probably not worth it. To me that's what sports anime/manga is all about.

Also each game/match can last several episodes (or chapters) so they move very slowly and a lot of time is spent on each teams reaction to the current game. Depending on the anime/manga, there can be lots of ridiculous and unnecessary talking during games. In Kuroko no Basuke I swear sometimes the characters will stop to have a little chat with their teammates and they somehow have time for what seems like five minute introspectives and can magically hear people talking from the top of the stadium. You can't take them too seriously.

As someone who has never had a real interest in sports (only casually, when playing them myself), cute characters and their relationships is about the only thing that could make me care.

Maybe just...browse the fanart anyway? The fanfic is mostly terrible, tbh.

Yeah, they probably aren't for me, but unfortunately for me, those are the animanga fandoms big on tumblr and when it comes to western anime fandoms.

I got nothing against friendship and series focused on that, but these series tend to take it too far for me. And if they had something going for them besides that and sports, I'd be more interested.

Probably just check out the fanart.

Yea...almost all the story-lines and arcs link back to sports and friendship so... you might not like them.

But of course if you really care about giving it a shot, you can! (I was surprised at how much I enjoyed them, but of course I dig the friendship and teamwork.)

I wish I could suggest other popular anime/manga fandoms but I don't know any besides Kill la Kill and Attack on Titan and I haven't watched/read either.

I will probably give them a shot when I can. I'd like to have a more active fandom and since these are what is hot, it is worth a try. Who knows, maybe I will be pleasantly surprised and find something to enjoy in them.

I tried AoT but don't care for any of the characters and only keep up to see what is happening. Kill la Kill is actually on my to watch list. And don't worry about it!:) I've got a whole list of things to try!

Ah, well if you do get around to them I hope you enjoy! For me (as said, I haven't watched many) I think Haikyuu!! is the best, but the anime is only a season long so far so it isn't much to watch. The manga is ongoing but I love it.

I wanted to watch AoT simply to see what all the fuss is about but haven't got around to it. I never know what to expect; I've heard a fair amount of 'the characters are forgettable'.

I feel like sports anime to me is more about the comedy gold than the friendship/brotp, but that's just my wacky perspective. That, and it's usually a break anime from my usual line up of psychological and fighting shonen. Though, I'll admit I usually get into sports anime much more and for the long haul compared to other animes where I like them for a season or two and then it kind of disappears from my likes.

IA Matches can go on forever. I think worst than the magical game time talks is the sports anime where they constantly have to remind you via flashbacks what happened an episode or five minutes ago.

Also it's really weird to say, but I like when I see your Kuroko and Haikyuu icons show up on FS. Sports anime rep in FS!

Also to OP, don't necessarily think a sports anime will be popular for the long haul. Some of them like Kuroko are, but a lot of them fizzle out too. I'll just go weep in the corner about the very small selection of Oofuri fandom there is left.

Oh man, I have a sport anime feelings today...

Liking them for the comedic factor is not a wacky perspective! I probably should've mentioned that but I do feel like I touched on it with how ridiculous everything often is. (Akashi, for instance. OMG when Akashi went on about cutting his eyes out all I could do was stare at the screen in disbelief and say "THIS IS ONLY BASKETBALL, WHAT THE FUCK"!) Plus all the jump scares Kuroko causes people, and Hinata and Kagayama always fighting in Haikyuu!! I love the friendship stuff and it plays the biggest part for me, but the humor is very important too (and the shows wouldn't be the same without it). I can see why you stick with them as they tend to be really easy to watch and feel-good anime that are entertaining. That is not a bad thing!

The flashbacks are of course hilarious as well. Especially when they happen right after the magical mid-game talks so everyone is apparently just standing on the court in shock while whoever replays what they did to prepare for this moment.

Awww, I don't find it weird! I take this as the highest compliment; it makes me feel a bit less bad about constantly changing icons and confusing people re: my identity.

And you're probably right in that sports anime will probably not always be popular. It seems to have only gotten popular in the last couple of years, right? I know there were other sports anime before (well liked ones), but it seems like now there's more than ever. (Maybe this is only because I wasn't so aware of them before.)

Oh I love the Kuroko jump scares. That and his flat lined delivery of comedy. He had me at "Look at these guns". Everything about Kagayama is glorious and geeky, it is everything. Especially his relationship with Tsuuki~. I'm dying waiting for the second season of the anime.

Has there ever been a parody anime that's touched on sports anime? Like I could see someone in the stands yelling at them to "Get the hell on with it"

You shouldn't feel bad about using multiple icons! Personally I'd rather see different icons to reflect the mood of the comment of commenter.

I meant more OP should careful which one you pick, some of them have a very brief shelf life. The usually tend to die down when anime or manga cease to be regularly produced. There will be some hardcore fans still there, but nothing like it was. I remember ten years ago (lol look at me dating myself) Prince of Tennis had such a huge fanbase, and it still has some but it's nowhere near as big. Oofuri was decently sized, but now there's so little fandom base people don't even do proper scantalations. But yeah, there's always been a few big series out here and there but it seems like fandom pays more attention to it.

I also find it amusing that OP ref'ed that sports anime seems really popular western side, but it seems like every time they try and licence it it flops hard. I'd be interested to see if Kuroko gets licensed how it would do. That and see how Haikyuu's sales do when it gets released on dvd/bluray.

"Look at these guns" was good, as was his "I'm so happy I can barely contain myself" moment. (The one where Kagami screams, "Don't die Kuroko!") Plus there's all the moments where he seems to be rejecting Kise and him being underestimated because of his appearance never gets old. Kagayama is perfection and I tend to love all his relationships, but the one with Tsuuki is particularly funny. I love how difficult it is for him to say something nice, lol. (And how scared everyone is when they see him smile.)

I don't know, but I hope something like that gets made. I would watch it.

As someone who has way too many interests to be tied down to one (or ten, or a hundred <.<) icon that makes me happy!

Ah, alright. At least Kuroko no Basuke is finished (well, sort of...I know there's a sequel, I'm been following it though it's been slow to release, but it seems like it might be a short one?) but I could see Haikyuu!! going for a long time. I hope so, anyway. (I think it's one of my favorite manga now.) Would you recommend Prince of Tennis, btw? I've been wondering if I should try it; I remember how massive it was back in the day and I've never watched it. I've never heard of Oofuri, but that's depressing. :/

Did Prince of Tennis do well here? (Or was it even licensed?) Haikyuu!! is one of the few I would probably buy. I tend to use crunchyroll when I can but it isn't ideal. (The constant ads drive me up the wall.)

Re: spoilers

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. I especially loved that uber happy one when he made his own shot. I think Kagayama can for some people, but when it comes to Tsukki he absolutely can't. Probubly because he keeps calling him king of the court and that pisses Kagayama off so much.

I just wonder how much more Kuroko anime will be made? I only recently started season 1, but it feels like they should be to Winter Cup by the end of the third season unless they really drag it out. Or maybe there's thing I don't know. Hahaha. I really do love Haikyuu too. As for Prince of Tennis, I have very fond memories but I'm rewatching it now and it's really dated compared to something as visually appealing as the newer animes. It has the problem of too many flashbacks, whole episodes dedicated to looking at what's gone on, etc. Also it's a 170 something, multi movie and ova deal. Basically not for the weak of heart. But it has some amazing teams and characters, so I really love it. And the comedy is amazing. So just go into it knowing it's can be a bit of a chore. I only say this because I rec'ed this to many a friend who hated me because it went on so long. I would rec the first season of Oofuri. If you love friendship's, Minashi and Abe's is top tier friendship material. Just watch the first, maybe even the second season, but pretend they won it afterwards. The manga started to drag after the anime material is done.

It was released by Viz, and those bastards pulled it after 50 episode (4 boxsets) because it didn't sell. I get angry because I feel they didn't try hard enough to market it. They only aired it a few times on cartoon networks adult swim, then put it online. But back then, who really streamed?

Do you have ad block plus? I know sometimes I'm lucky with crunchyroll and ABP will confuse it and make it skip ads. I don't have an account, so I wouldn't be logged in if you try it. I also have ABP set to pretty much strict filtering.

Re: spoilers

[personal profile] elaminator 2015-04-23 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Tsukki doesn't make it easy for him, no. He was kind of a dick earlier in the manga, but he's grown a bit since then and I'm fond of him these days. (And he is, I admit, quite funny!)

Well the anime is on its third season right now, and I'm pretty sure it's the last one. I think I'm about two episodes behind, but the final game of the series should be going on now. I suppose they could do a movie or another OVA, but it seems like they've covered most everything. (It's going to be weird when the anime finishes. I found out the manga was ending like...maybe a month after I started watching the anime and reading the manga, so it was disappointing and odd.)

It isn't even on crunchyroll either! (Or the app, anyway.) The sequel (?) is but not the original. Maybe it's on the website...or some other streaming site. I'll think about it. It sounds really long, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but...I don't really need another time waster.

Will try to remember Oofuri, thanks! If only a season or two are decent then that isn't a massive commitment. (Maybe in the future!)

Wow, I would be majorly upset if I was a POT fan! You're right, streaming wasn't a big thing back then. I would've watched it had I seen it on Cartoon Network!

Yup, I have ad block plus, but I spend more time on my phone than on my computer so I tend to use the app instead of watching from the website. It's convenient, but frustrating.
