Re: Star Wars: Rebels

I tried to get into Rebels during S1, and I just couldn't do it. And I really, really wanted it to work out. Didn't help Disney killed my momentum by releasing episodes a week early on the Disney XD app... what was the point of trying to talk about the new-to-me episode when the majority of folks had moved on to the next one?

That said, I'm so hoping S2 gets it together. I really want to learn more specifics about Zeb's backstory and see more development for him outside of being the bruiser and/or comic foil to Ezra, though I might be biased, because in spite of my feelings for the show as a whole, I still have a soft spot for Zeb. (I even got to meet Steve Blum at ECCC, which was nice)

And hell, Sabine (whom I'm still kind of indifferent towards) could use a hell of a lot more character development while we're at it. As it stands right now, Zeb and Sabine are pretty much non-existent/filler characters while the story is focused on Kanan and Ezra. I guess that's one of the things I miss the most about Clone Wars: while it had a core cast of characters (Anakin, Ahsoka, Rex, and Obi-Wan), it was none the less an ensemble show, so there was a lot to see/do/develop. I get what they're trying to do with 'Rebels', but eh.

That said, I'm hoping S2 will be a lot better, especially since they now have 22 episodes to do a lot more stuff in, but at the same time, I'm not really holding my breath.

I never got into Clone Wars, but I can see someone watching season two for Ahsoka or what's his face. There's been so many cameos, too. I would laugh if Ezra randomly runs into kid!Luke at some point. That would probably kill it for me though.

Yes, the cameos were a big part of the buzzkill for me. I get they're trying to use them to lure in OT stans, but outside of Tarkin (who actually makes sense to be there) and I guess Darth Vader... you could probably do without the majority of them. Or at least, they could have spaced them out over the course of the series. (Like, a certain Jedi Master would have better served to show up a season or two later than they did)

I had to laugh that, at Star Wars Celebration this past weekend, Dave Filoni said "oh, we don't want to overdo the guest stars in this show" after someone asked him about Cad Bane possibly showing up. Ironic, considering we've had a boatload of OT characters show up in at least half the episodes of S1. At this rate, I almost anticipate them running into Han Solo and Chewie at the end of next season. At which point, the shark will have probably jumped itself.

It just kills me, man. This show has so much potential, but the cameos -incl. the non-movie characters from 'Clone Wars'- I feel are a crutch, and gives me the strong impression that Lucasfilm and Disney probably don't have as much faith in the project as they put on in PR. I'd like to be proven wrong, but some times I do wonder...

(Still, I can't hate on Rebels too much, because it effectively erased 'The Force Unleashed' from existence, so it has that going for it in my favor, ahaha)
