"Most of the time it's someone bashing a ship they hate."

In my experience it's the total opposite. I was in a very toxic fandom when it came to shipping wank recently, and the only people using 'trash' were the ones who shipped the thing they called trash.

It might be different for your fandoms, but in that case you could also argue that people are calling themselves/their ship trash first so as to preempt those who would use the term for hating or bashing.
