While I'll agree that trash is a slur in some cases, context and intent absolutely matter when it comes to words where the first or most prominent meaning isn't the slur. The first thing that comes to mind for spooks is ghosts (then CIA).
Fruit, coconut or Oreo, cracker, and slow would be fine in quite a few contexts where fag, darky, and retard would really not be fine in most contexts.
