(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 11:32 am (UTC)(link)If somebody isn't using a word to tell you that you don't belong in fandom, they're not telling you that you don't belong in fandom.
Let me repeat that last bit: NO ONE IS TELLING YOU THAT YOU DON'T BELONG IN FANDOM.
I mean fuck, if anything, you're more welcome in fandom than people of higher SES, who are treated like such devils that people actually pretend to be poor so they won't get shit.
And this, of course, is the problem with taking something and removing it from all context in the name of finding something to be upset about. But you're quite like most of the people I've known who complain about "microaggressions," since you're arrogant, insufferable, and think it's perfectly okay for you to treat other people like shit. It's not actually about privilege or oppression, it's about making it okay for you to be a massive douche.

Yes, asking someone to not casually use a slur that's been against you--that's just about the most massive douchebaggery you'll see in fandom.

Sure, us lucky poor fans. We miss out on the fandom social capital of going to conventions, buying merchandise, playing console games, meeting celebs, cosplaying, we're sometimes locked out of entire fandoms due to the expense (video game fandoms, anime fandoms), as well as enduring poverty and homelessness, and grinding, physically unhealthy menial labor, but someone might make you feel guilty because you have so much more money and social capital than us. WELL, I think we know who got the short end of the stick here!
