Good villains are HARD, OP. At least, for me they are. Either I enjoy them so much I can't make them proper antagonists anymore, or they just end up with no depth.

One of the things I enjoyed most about this show was the art style they used for different witches, how their attacks differed, and how you could connect a witch to the girl it came from but they were still fundamentally different entities.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
OP. Yeah as soon as the art style changed when Gertrude showed up and everything became a psychedelic cut-out nightmare I knew the witches were going to be the highlight of the show for me.

I am glad it inspired you, but who recs Madoka as a gateway anime??? It's a deconstruction. What's the point of watching a deconstruction without knowing anything about the tropes involved?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
My friends in the 1980's who thought Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns were good introductions to superhero comics, apparently. I thought it was silly then, too.

I get it, though, If something really clicks with you, you may recommend it because you think it's so cool, deconstruction or no.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
It's also a legitimately enjoyable show, which is I think the important part when it comes to, you know, hooking somebody.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't rec it as a gateway anime because I believe it's really good and sets up unrealistic expectations. I wouldn't rec Princess Tutu either.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I really wanna watch Princess Tutu but the dub is so terrible and the sub isn't available anywhere online :( It makes me sad.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
It's on BakaBt.

"don't rec good things because most things suck"

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
In before that anon who shows up to argue with anyone who says Madoka is a deconstruction because that wasn't the writer's intent!!!!1

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
OP. They recced it to me because I'm more into macabre stories and it's pretty short compared to some of the other anime that have a million episodes.
ketita: (Default)

[personal profile] ketita 2015-04-23 12:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok, those are actually good reasons to rec this show.
If you're looking for macabre (and are still interested in anime), maybe try the anime Parasyte? The story is very interesting, and it's only 24 episodes, which isn't a huge investment either.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
it's an enjoyable its own right and the concept is not hard to get
cloud_riven: Stick-man styled Apollo Justice wearing a Santa hat, and also holding a giant candy cane staff. (Apollo Justice is pretty awesome)

[personal profile] cloud_riven 2015-04-22 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Because it's enjoyable? If your media can't hold up on its own without the meta, and has a stupid "must have watched the animes. these ones." bar on it, it's probably shit.
ketita: (Default)

[personal profile] ketita 2015-04-23 12:28 pm (UTC)(link)
That's like saying Spaceballs is shit because it's a lot funnier if you've watched Star Wars.
Madoka's a good series, and can be watched on its own. That doesn't mean it's not better if you have the frame of reference for it.

A creative work can never be a deconstruction, deconstructivism is a way of literary critcism, what Madoka (or Evangelion) did are just subversion of tropes so stop using that word incorrectly and fucking educate yourself.

Besides you dont need to watch stuff in a certain order to enjoy them, thats like asking if you should read Don Quixote before reading modern novels, a good work will be appreciated any way regardless of the references that you may or may not understand, you think people watched Ideon when Evangelion was in the TV? I didnt and none of my friends did and they all enjoyed it.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
This so much.

Deconstruction is a method of critical analysis of philosophical and literary language that emphasizes the internal workings of language and conceptual systems, the relational quality of meaning, and the assumptions implicit in forms of expression. It is an attempt to rectify the inability of language to describe an objective reality by using it's usage to derive the processes of it's formation.

If language is not particularly apt to conveying reality, then it stands to reason that narrative devices, which are built on narratives, which are built largely on language, would do no better. And yet, here there are websites like tvtropes, applying the same methodology to them as deconstruction does to language, which is patently absurd and holds no real value because of this.

It is to analyze a work of text within the context of the text without any outside textual influence. An established work can't be a deconstruction. You can't deconstruct a genre because as stated before it is inclusive of other works.

Basically one infamous essay pimping Watchmen by repeating the word every second paragraph with no attempt at justifying its use made the term a cool buzzword among comic readers, so now TVtropes and other impressionable retards think it means a work that subverts or plays around with tropes common in its genre, or even worse offers a "realistic" take on a genre.

Yeah, I agree. I'm sure someone could enjoy it without being familiar with anime but familiarity is going to make it so much better.

Right? I admit I'm kind of surprised at the people who jumped on me, I didn't expect it to be so controversial XD. I thought it was kind of obvious, that part of Madoka's shtick is the way it subverts mahou shoujo tropes. You only really notice the subversion if you've watched mahou shoujo, though...

The Witches are one of the reasons I sometimes ponder watching the show (also the, uh, unique transformation sequences from the movies).

Gekidan Innu Curry (the guys who did the witches and the witches' worlds) are absolutely awesome and the best part of Madoka.

Have some videos animated by them:

Image: screen cap of the witches from Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Text: I don’t watch anime and my friends recced Puella as a gateway series to get me into it. I thought it was a decent enough show, nothing special, except for the witches.

They were so incredibly creative, some of the most imaginative villains I’ve seen in years. They inspired me to make my villains more unique and frightening like them. I feel like all my villains are bland as shit after watching this show.
