Do I have news for you!

Well, I don't know who John Gielgud is and I love Sir Ian, so that's at least one person for you!

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Ditto.
OP, please don't worry. I have no idea who this Gielgud guy is at all.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
These are the two most depressing comments I've read all year.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I promise you the world will not end if two people don't know one of the most famous actors of the London stage. It's because it's before most peoples' time and only a very small percentage of people will ever see a play, never mind a play in the West End.

Fuck this new social media! Soon they won't know who Bill Cosby is!

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 10:22 am (UTC)(link)
They'll know who he is. Just in the most unflattering light possible.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, pretty sure this has already happened, at least among the 50 and under crowd.

Make that 52 and under. I've heard of Gielgud, but Sir Ian is a hell of a lot more relevant to me.

He'll certainly be better remembered in general.

Probably not as a Shakespearean specifically, but there are perhaps a few more people paying attention to massive blockbuster film franchises than there are to Shakespearean theater, these days.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Shakespearean theater isn't the only thing Gielgud did.

You're absolutely right. I think it's probably at the center of his reputation, but no, you're right, there's definitely more to it than that.

I had to google him, so...

Hobson and Edward Ryder >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> anything McKellen has done onscreen.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
You made this secret just so you could have a bunch of people saying, "who's John Gielgud," didn't you?

Text: I’m still holding on to the hope that one day,

Ian McKellen

will be better remembered that John Gielgud.

John who?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't know it was a competition. Is it limited to two guys, or can we ask where Laurence Olivier fits in the mix? How about John Barrymore?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
Occasionally I will confuse John Gielgud with John Houseman. Totes weird!

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 11:13 am (UTC)(link)
John Gielgud died fifteen years ago - people who are big in the social media age are automatically bigger than anyone who died before said age happened. Also ... they are both great actors. There is room for everyone to be remembered.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 12:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Outside of the English speaking world definitely (blockbuster movies like the ones Ian stars in simply get wider distribution), and maybe even outside the UK in general. You tend to have more serious theatre people methinks.

I think he already is. I had to Google who John Gielgud is.
