Good for you, OP. I'm glad you have an escape from all political, all the time.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, word?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
oh yeah, because US-social justice discourse is the only fucking way to be political, right?

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 11:27 am (UTC)(link)
Fyi, I belong to an ethnic and sexual minority. But of course, the only way to be a decent human being is surrounding myself in fandom with negativity that I already experience in real life, all the time.

...Did you take what I said as sarcastic or something? Because it's not.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 01:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, because it implied that a human being living in any society can have an escape from politics all the time. I assume we both know it's not true?

Re: OP

No, it really doesn't? It implies that OP has found an escape from the "all political, all the time" experience that Western fandom has become for many.

"Good for you, OP. I'm glad you have an escape from all political, all the time."

Your deduction might make sense if you misread my sentence as saying "escape from the political, all the time" but the phrase, "all X, all the time" has a pretty clear meaning. That's what gives it the meaning of "an escape from the constant, never-ending X" rather than "escape from X all the time, never to experience it"

Never heard this phrase before, but it's not really surprising, since I'm not a native speaker.

Anyway, no hard feelings, I see your point now.

NAYRT

I don't think you were being sarcastic, but it would make far more sense if you had been, in terms of squaring it with other statements you've made.

The position you're arguing against seems, in all ways, like it should be your own. It's kinda baffling.

I really don't see how you came to that conclusion nonny. I don't recall ever arguing that everything should be held up to an ever-present political/sociological scrutiny.

A lot of my statements would logically contradict that idea, actually.

I dread some of my more obscure fandoms going mainstream for the same reasonn; the increase in fanwork isn't worth the influx of asshats intent on hijacking everything for SJW brownie points.

I feel you. SJW ranting is just so exhausting.

OP

It is. ;) But I actually just found out that some fandom material did get translated into English recently. But since the fandom has always been the nicest I've ever been to, I don't worry too much.

If the fandom is nice, here's hoping it'll continue like that!

(haha, squirrel makes me think of Akatsuki no Yona but I doubt it's that, I mean there was an anime just now. Even though it didn't make huge waves)

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I hope that too. :)

And no, it's not an anime. But if it's a pleasant fandom, good for you to be in it anyway :)

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
In case the last line sounded confusing: what I meant was, good for you to be a nice fandom, as well. :)

I do think it's good to analyze the works you consume and recognize if they have problematic (I fucking hate what this word has become, but I don't have a synonym I can think of right not) elements, but sometimes you just need to sit down and read/watch/whatever something and not have to worry about if it passes the Bechdel test or if it has representation, etc.

(I find it so frustrating how the overzealous SJW craze has made people so resentful and knee-jerky about actual SJ-related discussion because I think it's interesting and important)

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 11:36 am (UTC)(link)
I have no problem with analyzing. I love all kinds of fandom discussions. I just find it pretty exhausting when people get extremely aggressive about it. E.g. "Frozen is racist trash, it has only white leads and this fact alone devalues the entire film!" as an example. In fandoms with lots of SJWs it just seems to be the main kind of discussion: "Let's praise the show for its progressive (or what is seen as such) parts, and criticize the "problematic" ones!" As a person who belongs to a minority myself, I find it pretty draining after a while, because it's the kind of rl negaivity I try to escape from.
It's just nice to be in a fandom where people are not blind to such things, but the majority of discussions are still about the old-fashioned topics of storyline, style (in drawn media), pairings, etc.

Agreed. I think that it's definitely important to critically examine what you consume, and to be able to point out that while you enjoy it, there are elements to it that are worth being critical towards.

That said, no single form of media will ever appeal to every single demographic and minority ever. No form of media can be everything to everyone - it might have racial diversity but not have trans/nonbinary individuals; it might do great on discussing asexuality but doesn't show many Muslims in it. If you sit there constantly picking it apart and... well, almost looking for something to criticize, you won't be able to just enjoy it for what it is. It's okay for something to be fun - it doesn't have to have a political message or social commentary agenda all the time.

The downside here is that non English fandoms tend to be small and have few fan works.

I know, right? I'll take that over the negativity of big fandoms though, anytime.

Text: i’m so happy that my current fandom’s anon matrial isn’t available in English! it makes me sound like a petty person (and I probably am), but for one time i want to read fandom discussions without the sjw crowd on tumbr (which is predominantly english speaking) constantly chiming in. i do think that social issues are important, i just don’t want to see posts written primarily for the sake of politics in the fandom tags, not to speak of the flamewars.
