Things that put you off a series from the get go.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
To the point where you can't progress further into said series because it bothers you that much.

Mine would have to be-
1. Tamaki from Ouran. Can't stand him, can't stand his English VA, and it makes me not care about what story or growth he goes through.

2. I tried getting into Black Butler when it was the thing, but the first chapter showcasing how better Sebastian was than everyone else really put me off.

Jerk Geniuses. I LOATHE that character type, particularly when I'm supposed to see them as a wish fulfillment fantasy instead of that hateable coworker I could never escape.

I also get really put off by nerdy nice guy vs. douchey jock stories. ESPECIALLY if all the characters involved are adults, because for Chrissakes, high school is OVER. (Plus, I just think it taught young geeks, us included, that all we had to do to be a good person was cultivate appropriate hobbies.)

Honestly, a lot of nerd valorization bothers me. We were nerds and geeks growing up, but again, high school is over.

I stopped watching The Hour because it basically glorified cheating on your spouse. I already thought the writing sucked but it was the icing on the cake.

The second hand embarrassment I get from Parks and Rec has prevented me from watching the show.

Me too. I couldn't get through one episode.

I couldn't get past the first episode of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt because I was kind of disturbed by how light-hearted the treatment of her backstory was (in particular her line about weird sex stuff in the bunker).

The English VA of Tamaki is kind of a dick and only does the same voice over and over, so that's understandable. The Japanese VA is awesome though (not a dub vs sub thing, that VA just is one of the best male VAs ever imo).

Actually now that I think about it, Ouran and Black Butler are two of the very few anime where I don't like the sub. Ciel's voice didn't sound like a young British boy at all. Black Butler also really skeeved me out with the slash jokes. Like, normally that would be amazing to me, but Ciel is like prepubescent and so they weren't really gay jokes, they were pedophilia jokes, not cool, anime, not cool.

Yeah, Ciel is like twelve iirc. It is one of the things that puts me off the series and the fandom. Then again, I wasn't super interested in it anyway.

Really excessive fanservice. I mean really excessive. Like . . . What was that manga about a war robot who spends her last year of operational life as a maid in the home of a war orphan? I get it, the bot is anatomically correct; you don't need to keep stripping her naked.

(Finally remembered the title. Mahoromatic.)

My boyfriendstarted a show called Freezing, but even he got tired of the constant clothes ripping going on.

Couldn't get past the first episodes of Breaking Bad, How To Get Away With Murder, or The Wire. I just need to have someone I root for. There needs to be at least one likeable character for me. Not perfect, but at least somewhat likeable.

1. If the main character is a girl who's "not like other girls."

2. I never watched Raising Hope because even though everyone said it was really funny and had a sweet message at its heart and all that, I couldn't watch a show that used the death penalty as a plot setup. I didn't care that it was humorous and happened to a serial killer. I couldn't watch a show about characters who had no problem with it.

Asshole characters that are complete dicks but the narrative supports all their decisions and even presents them as a hero who can do no wrong, I can find that very hard to deal with because I like my asshole characters to actually be recognised as assholes, it's what makes that particular brand of character fun for me.

Assholes who learn how to be better people I have no issue with(hell I like a bit of asshole-redeeming sometimes), it's ones that don't change but are still clearly dicks that everyone's supposed to love that will piss me off to no end.

Unrelatable characters. There must be at least one or two that I connect with.

Poldark. Generic Horrid Redcoats, tick. Incorrect costume choices, tick. I lasted two and a half minutes and went and did the washing-up instead.

Sebastian pretty much stays better than everyone else, for the most part (we have yet to see him really face off a Shinigami or the Undertaker). But I was surprised once you get past the stuff that's been animated it feels like more comedy than serious matters.

I say that but it feels like we've been stuck in the Greenwitch fight for 74 years. God, please wrap it up in the next two chapters and move along to something else.

Personally I hate deus ex machina characters.

1. Too much exposition. I can figure out the rules on my own and the mysteries of a world's rules can be fun.

2. Jokes for jokes' sake. I like comedy but jokes that sit outside the story, that feel like something shoved in during a story session instead of something that is a natural occurrence in the story that just happens to be a gut-buster, really turn me off.

3. Stereotypes. It's not so much that they're offensive, though they are, but that they're lazy. Sometimes they work if they're handled in a novel way (stereotypical character with an atypical trait) or if they feel, again, organic (stereotype character has an obvious reason for acting in such a manner.) But, most of the type, they're just a sign of lazy writing.

4. Three-cam sitcoms. Fuck. That. Shit.

Too much hype - which is basically around luck since I tend to like popular stuff but if people are too hyped up about it I prob won't bother for a year or two of ever.

I proceed to get on hype trains of things I already enjoy. Ah well.
