I just go for it when I feel that way, tbh. The latest fic I wrote because it was what I wanted to read got less than 200 hits, in a fandom where most fics get three times that. It was slightly disappointing at first, but I expected it because I knew going in there wasn't much interest for the pairing or my take on the pairing. But then I got a comment that was so sweet and glowing that it completely made up for the relative lack of attention. Most of the fics in this fandom get way more comments than that, but it was such a nice comment that I don't even care anymore. The rest of the authors can keep their "more plz"/"this is hawt" comments.
