How's that go? Everybody has a 100 000 words of bad writing they have to get through before they can write well, or something.

I think I suck at writing too. But that won't help if I want to write—or more importantly, if the story I want to be written is to be written.

So do you practice?

Not everyone has the time or inclination to devote that much energy to writing fanfiction. Nothing wrong with it if you do and in fact great, I love reading good fanfic - but I'm not going to make a sacrifice to write something if I don't really like writing, and honestly, I'm not very good at it, and that's ok because there are other things I spend time being good at.

I know how you feel. My favorite pairings have never been popular and now they are not being written at all. I do try to write the pairings I like myself because of that, but I suspect my writing is pretty bad too :(

I have that problem with popular fics too, but for me, it's usually what spurs me into writing my own fic in a given fandom. Mine are never as popular, but eh, what can you do. Once I eventually leave the fandom, my fics are about the only ones I re-read later.

I'm curious as to what fandom you're in! (It could be anything!)

Sucks though, OP. :/

I feel your pain. I often run into that problem, and while I do write fics for the pairings I like, there's something unappealing about only having your own writing when you just want to read a romantic story about your OTP.

But, you could give writing them a try. Maybe someone else ships them too, and would be thankful for any fic.

Not to mention the lack of feedback for an unpopular pairing.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I just go for it when I feel that way, tbh. The latest fic I wrote because it was what I wanted to read got less than 200 hits, in a fandom where most fics get three times that. It was slightly disappointing at first, but I expected it because I knew going in there wasn't much interest for the pairing or my take on the pairing. But then I got a comment that was so sweet and glowing that it completely made up for the relative lack of attention. Most of the fics in this fandom get way more comments than that, but it was such a nice comment that I don't even care anymore. The rest of the authors can keep their "more plz"/"this is hawt" comments.

This is exactly why I do write fics of my ships. I've always thought there must be some people out there who like the same ships I do, and maybe if they see my fics they may start writing themselves.

I'd also like to think my writing might be improving a little, but I honestly really can't tell.

I've been in a situation when a fic for rare pare inspired me to write because suddenly there was someone shipping it too.

Sometimes you have to be the change you want to see in the world, OP.

You're already contradicting yourself by saying that no one would read the fics you want to see - if someone else wrote them, you'd read it right? And unless you have very niche tastes in a very small fandom, you won't be the only one.

I admit I have a slight issue of entitlement with opinions like yours, if only because of my experience as the writer of a juggernaut pairing in a certain fandom and the constant demands that I write something else just because it wasn't fair that the ship I wrote was more popular than whatever the person complaining about it liked. They never tried making a thing themselves, just harrassed writers of pairings they didn't like and deemed "too popular" to try and make us write their requests on demand, as though that tactic would endear anyone to their ship.

The unfortunate fact is that no one else is under any obligation to cater to your taste, OP, and sometimes if you want to spread the love and drum up enthusiasm you have to do it yourself. Sometimes it works, and sometimes (see above re: niche tastes and small fandoms) it doesn't, but it beats sitting around feeling hard done by by the rest of your fandom.

The trouble with my fandom is I don’t find any of the most popular fic pairings remotely believable, and no one writes the ones I’d love to read (yes I’ve requestd them).

I’d write them myself but no one would read them, and also I suck at writing fic.

Just write it for yourself, who cares if other people read it? Write the stories you want.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 11:53 am (UTC)(link)
I gotta ask - is that your fic would be bad the real reason you don't want to write? Or are you just not interested in writing it?

I'm curious because I have a couple friends who love reading fic but have no interest in writing it, but have gotten flak for saying so, so they come up with any excuse to wave off their lack of writing. I've never encountered that "good fic readers also write" thing in my fandoms, but mine are small and since they've both done it I guess it must be a thing.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but I've never come across someone who's exclusively a reader getting any flak in my fandoms, large or small. I'd imagine that there's always going to be a skew towards more consumers than producers when it comes to fanwork, and some of us will create a lot in one fandom but merely lurk in others.

What I do see getting flak, or at least becoming tiresome, is the readers who whine about their ship never getting any fics, badgering other writers with 'requests' constantly, and generally hating on the popular ships for being popular while doing nothing to actually contribute towards the disparity themselves. I'm not saying it's wrong to express your disappointment in lack of fic that's to your taste, but the best way to try changing that is to enthuse and create (no matter how badly) for the thing you like, not demonize the popular thing as though its existence alone is the reason you can't have nice things.
