I gotta ask - is that your fic would be bad the real reason you don't want to write? Or are you just not interested in writing it?

I'm curious because I have a couple friends who love reading fic but have no interest in writing it, but have gotten flak for saying so, so they come up with any excuse to wave off their lack of writing. I've never encountered that "good fic readers also write" thing in my fandoms, but mine are small and since they've both done it I guess it must be a thing.

Not OP, but I've never come across someone who's exclusively a reader getting any flak in my fandoms, large or small. I'd imagine that there's always going to be a skew towards more consumers than producers when it comes to fanwork, and some of us will create a lot in one fandom but merely lurk in others.

What I do see getting flak, or at least becoming tiresome, is the readers who whine about their ship never getting any fics, badgering other writers with 'requests' constantly, and generally hating on the popular ships for being popular while doing nothing to actually contribute towards the disparity themselves. I'm not saying it's wrong to express your disappointment in lack of fic that's to your taste, but the best way to try changing that is to enthuse and create (no matter how badly) for the thing you like, not demonize the popular thing as though its existence alone is the reason you can't have nice things.
