Gay Iceman (Bobby Drake)

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
So, Marvel has released a comic that has Iceman as gay. Which would be cool, except the way they did it seems really fucking skeevy.

-Jean Grey reads his mind without permission and calls him out his PRIVATE thoughts
-He tries to deny it but she (continueing to reads his mind) pressures him into sort of admitting it
-He says he might be bi (his older self has had relationships with women + he was saying a woman was hot in the comic). Jean Grey goes all, "LOL. No, you are totally gay. I know more about you than you."

So, yeah...seemed like a pretty fucking terrible way to make a character gay. Also, bisexual is still a no-no term we don't talk about.

Well, I suppose it makes sense given a world where telepaths exist, but it does seem like rather bad writing.

Yeah, I was reading about that on /co/ a while ago. Can't say I'm impressed, but I don't follow X-Men stories anyway so I don't have a particular investment there. It makes me think of that one webcomic where people keep genderswitching, and this one page about how a character was told they were genderqueer. Just. All the ham-handed trying that tries too hard.

da, and ot to boot

I know which comic you're talking about, and in context... I mean, it was clumsily written, sure, but to me, it seemed less like she was saying "yep, you're genderqueer, surprise!" and more of "okay, so there's a word for this, and because I live with you and talk to you all the time, I think it might apply to you."

There's a world of difference in the "outed" characters' reactions, too. Bobby's reaction is along the lines of "no no nope I do not identify that way, deny deny deny!" and the webcomic character's reaction is literally "there's a word for it. omg, there's a word for it."

Which might be clumsily written, but strikes a chord with me, as I have had that moment myself.

Yeah. I don't get it. Why? Why any of what they did?
Representation? I guess. I mean, if she says he's gay and she can read his mind, then he must be gay.

Is that the representation you want though? Someone who doesn't even seem to be aware that they're gay.

Yeah, Bendis is...difficult to like sometimes. The most frustrating part is that it's actually pretty believable that Bobby in particular has a repressed attraction to men (and, ngl, it makes me feel really vindicated as someone who was super, super into Jean-Paul/Bobby like over a decade ago). If this plotline were to involve any of the X-men, then I really do think that Bobby would be one of the characters to make the most sense. The writing for it so far really does not fill me with confidence though. Oh, Bendis...some of your plotlines are just ALMOST there but not quite. You tried, I guess

Rogan: OH MY GOD I know the run you're talking about! It was one of the first arcs of X-men we read!

Miranda: If I were to ship Bobby with anyone, it'd be Hank, myself.

I'll admit, when I thought about it, I was like you. I was all "yeah okay, this interpretation actually sorta works!" Then I read the issue and was just "goddamn bendis."

I heard a lot of bisexual people not liking it because of the 'lol everyone is bisexual they say, but not you, you're full blown gay. Why? Because you madde Kitty go to outerspace!"

Like what the fuck, how does that make sense?

I guess the sliding timeline now allows young!Jean to be a 1990's concern!hag. Is that a word? That straight girl friend who tells you what your sexuality is according to her. Gag. (And yes I was even that young and arrogant once myself, sorry to everyone I said dumb stuff to.)
