AGE OF ULTRON REVIEW
(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 03:01 am (UTC)(link)(I got to see an advance screening.)
Here we go:
- both I and the comic-savvy person I saw it with thought that Cap is better written in this, compared to the Avengers where he was kind of a jerk. It seems closer to how his character should be written. Not perfect, but an improvement. He also gets a bit of backstory time, but I thought they could have had more room to play with that (Dude was in WWII...)
- it's Joss Whedon, so witty quips and snarky one-liners abound. I guess if you don't like that kind of thing, it might annoy you. but I (and the rest of the audience) laughed a lot and had fun.
- Ultron was an okay villian. I feel like he could have been scarier. as far as the writing/dialogue goes, it was pretty good. but as for being an actual menacing presence on-screen... i felt like he fell short. remember that scene in the Winter Soldier, when he first shows up? i got goosebumps in that scene. even though i knew there'd be a happy ending etc., a part of me still thought "OH SHIT EVERYONE'S GONNA DIE"
that didn't happen here.
/soapbox time
part of the reason for that, imo, is that they made his face expressive in a human way. (which doesn't make any sense b/c he's a robot made of metal but whatever.) i feel like if they'd given him more a mask-like face it would have had an uncanny-valley effect.
another thing is simply the fact that he's CGI. I think CGI villians are much much harder to make scary, because we don't process them visually as being "real" and solidly there in the same way as puppets or animatronics. hence why The Thing is still scary as hell despite being made years ago.
See also: David Cronenberg.
this is also why i think Thanos will inevitably be disappointing b/c he's CGI and just not that scary or intimidating.
- there are still some serious "wow" moments. one is when Ultron is introduced, and all the heroes go "OH CRAP". anothere is when a certain super gets introduced near the climax, and everyone goes "WTF JUST HAPPENED I DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS GOOD OR BAD." those were very effective.
- there's this weird scene with Thor standing shirtless in an underground lake having visions or something. I have no idea what that's about. something to do with Loki and the infinity stones. comics people probably knew more than me.
other stuff:
- lots of cool team-ups with supers, or super-vs-super battles, with creative use of powers and playing off each other
- most of the Avengers get extra screentime/backstory, especially Nat & Bruce.
- Hayley Atwell appears and there is a single-line mention of Bucky
- Rhodey and Sam Wilson also show up. so does Nick Fury
- Pepper and Natalie Portman are absent
- a brief shout-out to the Steven/Tony shippers at the end
- someone dies but it's not who you think it is
- Bruce Nat is a thing and I ship it now. THEY BOTH DESERVE TO BE HAPPY GODDAMMIT.
- Hawkeye gets a ton of screentime. MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THIS. Just know that no matter who you shipped him with, your ship is sunk.
- the Maximoffs aren't really linked to the X-Men. they're referred to as 'enhanced' and their backstory doesn't have anything to do with Magneto, far as I can tell.
- see if you can spot what I think is the brief, blink-and-you'll-miss-it Wolverine reference!
- as for that youtube spiderman end-credits clip floating around... we DID get an end-credits scene, but it wasn't that. it was just connecting to GotG and Loki. so i can't really confirm whether or not Spidey will be in the next film or not. (personally i hope not because spiderman needs a rest already, he's already had a trilogy and another two movies, FFS.)
- I was worried this was going to be the Tony Stark Show, but I was pleasantly surprised. I mean, he's a big part of it (since he builds Ultron and all that) but he's not the only part.
- overall it was pretty good, 8/10

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 05:16 am (UTC)(link)They basically handwave why she isn't there. "Away on business" pretty much.

Re: AGE OF ULTRON REVIEW
(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 05:47 am (UTC)(link)AoU does directly carry over from Avengers, though, in terms of Tony freaking the fuck out about space and aliens and everyone dying.
Tony/Pepper is still A-OK in canon! Your ship is safe. :)
Re: AGE OF ULTRON REVIEW
Im3 ended with tony destroying all his suits? And may or may not broken up with pepper? Idk I found the final ending very unclear. I'll probably never know - looks like there's many more movies going to happen and I'll prob fall behind and then just...stop...watching.
Re: AGE OF ULTRON REVIEW
(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 06:05 am (UTC)(link)Yeah.
No, it doesn't connect with that at all. Which is stupid. :/
It's more like a direct connection to The Avengers.
(I am totally not going to see Ant-Man. Yeah, it looks like it might be funny, but I'm still not going to see it. It's... it's Ant-Man. Come on, Marvel, you can do better than that.)

Re: AGE OF ULTRON REVIEW
(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 04:08 am (UTC)(link)What precisely? If you don't mind my asking?
Also, could you expand on the Peggy, Bucky, and Sam stuff?
Thanks for writing this up!
Re: AGE OF ULTRON REVIEW
(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 05:16 am (UTC)(link)Peggy appears for like... one scene in a flashback.
Sam also appears briefly.
Bucky is mentioned off-handedly - "How's your missing person's investigation going?"
REQUESTING SPOILERS
(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 05:53 am (UTC)(link)What about quicksliver?
Re: REQUESTING SPOILERS
(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 06:03 am (UTC)(link)Nope, Hawkeye lives. Like I said, it isn't who you think.
Re: REQUESTING SPOILERS
(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)Any of these right?
