Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is the reason for this topic. (A post came across my tumblr dash reminding me how amazing, challenging and atmospheric the boss fights are and made me restart the game.) My first time through MGR was full of surprise, cheering and wtf moments, and on review I have to say it is just as fun now as it was then. I tend to care more about storytelling and characters than gameplay (though gameplay is obviously important and can ruin a game, if I don't care about the story or characters I don't typically see the point), but MGR is one of the few games that I want to play because it's damn enjoyable. (I do admittedly love Raiden and Jetstream Sam, but seriously.)

As far as runner ups go, I'll have to say Portal because...duh (Portal was groundbreaking for me, and is honestly one of the funniest things I've ever seen), Jet Grind Radio/Jet Set Radio Future (uh, the soundtrack to that game was perfection; I spent a lot of time just skating around listening to music and trying to collect new graffiti) and Mario 64 (a classic, for good reason).

Heh, was it that bodybuilder guy who looks like the Senator?

http://elaminator.tumblr.com/post/117094583256/who-was-the-best-boss-in-mgr It was actually just a text post with the lyrics of "The only thing I know for real" but it brought me back to how damn magnificent (and fitting!) the music is in Rising.

(Plus the ridiculously over-the-top cutscenes and game-play sections, like The Ray at the start of the game. The first time Raiden jumped from missile to missile I couldn't stop laughing, but it was the best thing.)

Though (as annoying as he is) Armstrong's fight was pretty damn epic.

I did like the music in MGR. A lot.

Senator Armstrong, to me, is the best part of the game, because of how heavily focused on politics I was in the early-to-mid 2000s. He's so perfectly an example of an early-00s Republican that it's almost parody -- hawkish social Darwinist ex-college football player (from University of Texas, natch) with an anarchic vision of the future.

I keep it on my cell and listen to it whenever I'm doing housework. (Or whenever I need a pick-me-up; it's oddly happy-making.)

I think that's exactly why people are always going on about Armstrong! His entire character does feel like a parody, and I can't imagine that not being his purpose. It's too real.
