What's your most fun video game?

[personal profile] elaminator 2015-04-23 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Not the best, not even necessarily your favorite, but as far as experiences go which one was an absolute delight to play?

(If you can't do one, do a top five. I don't mind.)

Okami. It's an absolutely beautiful game for a start but the actual mechanics were so much fun to do and all the mythology they packed into the game was really, really cool. I haven't played it in such a long time though, but I really should. I love it.

Confession: I have never played Okami, but I've always wanted to. It looks beautiful and fun so I'm not at all surprised to see it in this thread.

I can't particularly rank them, but Black Flag, Metal Gear Rising Revengeance, The Orange Box, Portal 2 and AC2 are my picks.

The Rising post you reblogged the other day was the inspiration for this thread! (It reminded me of how perfect Rising was and made me start over again. It's a damn fine game and sheer joy to play.)

I feel the same way about both Portal games but (while I love them and had a lot of fun with them) I don't think the Assassin games would be in my top five simply because there's so much collecting and though I LOVE collecting, at a certain point I get kind of obsessive about it and it gets repetitive. So they're definitely great, but I have issues that prevent me from viewing them that way, lmao. (Some of the assassinations are very fun and make you feel like the biggest badass though. Duel assassinations are the best.)

King's Quest 6 or 3. Really, I love all the King's Quest games but those are the two I play the most.

I also love all the Myst games and I enjoy the hell out of Diable 2.

Crackdown. Just so much fun to run around and do ridiculous crap, but it's a shame the second one was so underwhelming. Closest to that feeling since was Saints Row IV, which I loved.

Skyrim is an oddly zen experience for me, and Katamari Damacy was also pure joy.

I love The Sims and Roller Coaster Tycoon because they kept me entertained for hours and I could always go back and start over.

Spyro: Ripto's Rage was another one of my favorite games.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is the reason for this topic. (A post came across my tumblr dash reminding me how amazing, challenging and atmospheric the boss fights are and made me restart the game.) My first time through MGR was full of surprise, cheering and wtf moments, and on review I have to say it is just as fun now as it was then. I tend to care more about storytelling and characters than gameplay (though gameplay is obviously important and can ruin a game, if I don't care about the story or characters I don't typically see the point), but MGR is one of the few games that I want to play because it's damn enjoyable. (I do admittedly love Raiden and Jetstream Sam, but seriously.)

As far as runner ups go, I'll have to say Portal because...duh (Portal was groundbreaking for me, and is honestly one of the funniest things I've ever seen), Jet Grind Radio/Jet Set Radio Future (uh, the soundtrack to that game was perfection; I spent a lot of time just skating around listening to music and trying to collect new graffiti) and Mario 64 (a classic, for good reason).

Saints Row. I've played all of them except the first, and they're the antidote to every frustrating, tedious game I've ever played. After I finished playing Dragon Age: Inquisition, I switched over to Saints Row IV and felt like a weight had been lifted from my shoulders. Or like someone had been holding a pillow over my face and I finally fought them off.

I'll do a top five*! Picking THE ONE is hard for me. Also, gamers still love lists, right? They breathe that stuff.

  1. New Super Mario Bros. (Wii) Playing that game in full four-player mode is the best. Especially if most of you are terrible or ascended trolls who can fail through together till the end of the game. Very shouty experience ("I'm helping you :)" "GET AWAY FROM ME.")
  2. Uniracers (SNES) I'm so glad my dad bought this. you can spend forever in the infinite mode trying to do as many "tricks" with your sentient unicycle. I remember having romantic feelings toward the rival known as "Sylvia", a silvery unicycle <:|a They had such cute victory and losing animations, plus the music makes you feel like the king of uniracing
  3. Portal 1 and 2(PC/PS3) Besides the AHA moments when you figure out a puzzle, which might make it less replayable if you live for that, it's just such a joy. The first one is just the right length and almost just pure gameplay, and the second one is that with a great story on top. And the co-op is also beautiful (and shouty if you're in the same room).
  4. Cave Story (everrrrythiiiing iirc?) It's a Metroidy Mega Man like with catchy tunes, but more importantly it's just fun to shoot everything and use all the special guns (or not SPOILERS EH? EH?). The bosses can make you tear your hair out, but they're also ridiculous fun. Def recommend the free PC version (although the Steam one is also great and offers the HDified redone graphics and music. Original music track is better imo—).
  5. VVVVVV (also everything. but go PC)

*ETA. uh actually more of a top five as in the first five games I could think of off the top of my head

Primal carnage extinction free roam. I like just running around admiring the scenery and climbing things. Sometimes I run circles around other dinosaurs

Stranded Deep is a new favourite too. Just building my house and trying not to accidentally eradicate my crab population.

Kind of weird answer but...

Seeing as how I currently don't have access to any games, the most fun I have is watching blind Let's Plays of Spec Ops: The Line

Oh Jesus is that fun. I spend so much time cackling it's ridiculous.

Probably Saints Row 3 or 4, followed by various Borderland games and the Mount and Blade series* depending on exactly how I'm feeling.

*I usually play mods though, which all of the games have been built with mod support in mind so...idk if that counts?

I made a secret about this last week, and I still stand by it.

Claw. The designs are cool, the gameplay is simple but appropriately challenging, and there's a lot of replay value as you try to get all the treasure in each level. Plus, Claw's "idle" dialogue is hilarious.

LIST TIME!

1. Jet Set Radio Future - This game was literally the whole reason I got an Xbox and I don't regret it one bit. This game was endless hours of awesome fun for me. The gameplay was fun, the graffiti and characters were bitchin', and the music was EXCELLENT.

2. Thief: Deadly Shadows - I love stealth games thanks to this one. I think I played this game, beginning to end, over 30 times. Sometimes back to back. The atmosphere is what won me over most, but the characters were also really great.

3. Vectorman - This random gem was from the Sega Genesis and it was so cool to me way back when. The only downfall was the lack of a save feature but I made it to level 19 on my own dumb luck, so woo!

4. Morrowind & Skyrim - Kind of cheating but these are the only two I've played fully and they're both endless joy. Any game where I have just as much fun painstakingly placing gems and keys on shelves as I do running through a bandit cave or a Dwemer ruin is definitely worth adding to a list of my most funtimes games.

5. Bully - How can I not!? ENDLESS FUN! This game is not given enough love or credit. It has some of the best sidegames and sidequests I've seen in a game, and the main stuff is equally as good. The characters are interesting and have their own unique personalities, npcs included. Plus, you get to cause mischief in school, what more do you need?

Honorable mention: Subway Surfers - Just cause.

Katamari Damacy and its sequels. The gameplay itself is simple and intuitive, the "plot" and characters are absolutely stupid and hilarious, and there's just something so very delightful about rolling a ball of junk around a city, running screaming people down to add them into said ball, and growing it larger and larger until you're picking up entire BUILDINGS FULL OF PEOPLE SCREAMING. And dinosaurs. And giant robots fighting Godzilla type monsters. And so on. And since the stages mostly have time limits, you can just pop in for a level or two if you want, then go back to whatever you're supposed to be doing, so it's good for the casual gamer as well as those of us who are cool with hours-long marathon gaming sessions. :D

Kingdom of Loathing.

It's, uh, weird. I don't so much play the game as spend hours scripting the game to autoplay itself. But there's just something intensely satisfying about finally finishing your script and then watching it run through the game automatically. Plus there's never a lack of stuff to script with every update.

To me "favorite" and "most fun" tend to be one and the same.

But pretty much any video game I pursue past a few hours is a delight on some level or another, though in different ways. When I think of just sheer delight, like laughing and having lighthearted fun, Nintendo is usually the way to go - especially Pokemon, SSB and Mario Kart. (LoZ starts to cross that line into "fun because it's awesome/challenging/sometimes dark/has a story" rather than "fun because it's just so damn fun".)
