Sandbox games?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Does anyone have any recommendations for sandbox-type games?

Ones that you can explore a world. I love playing RPGs and the like where you can just sort of roam around and discover things.

Wayward is one of my favorites! It's more of a survival game and it's kind of hard at first, but once you progress far enough you can travel to new worlds to continue exploring.

Ah, thank you! And it's free, too, awesome! This will keep me entertained. :)

The Fable games are great for this.

State of decay is a zombie one. All about survival and once you get in the swing if being cautious you're alright

Stranded deep is still only in early access but the map basically never ends and there's things you can find. I hope it gets more material added to it soon. I found a whale yesterday!

Fallout: New Vegas gets my vote, personally. The map is gigantic, and there's a million things and places to discover in it. Plus if you play in "Hardcore" mode, it really changes up how you think about where you are and where you need to be, by making you pay attention to your hunger, thirst, and tiredness. It's awesome.

+1, though really any of the Bethesda open world games works for this. If doing needs [thirst/hunger/rest] is your jam then there's a mod for most of their open world games that does that - and actually that's why Bethesda decided to just go ahead and include in FO:NV, iirc.

Fallout 3, with its lessened emphasis on story, is far more sandboxy, to be fair -- and FONV's "hardcore mode" is kind of broken. However, Project Nevada fixes and expands on the idea, and Fallout 3 has Fallout Wanderer's Edition, which is by far one of my favourite mods for any game.

There's also Tale of Two Wastelands which opens both Fallout 3 and NV up quite a bit - and makes 3 far, far more stable.

Just fair warning in that it can be a little bit of a pain to install sometimes.

Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas (warning in that it's somewhat constrained compared to FO3), Skyrim. Also the GTA series starting from 3 onwards -- aside from the PSP/PS2-only Vice City Stories/Liberty City Stories, which are prequels to, and reuse the setting from, Vice City and 3 respectively, each successive game gets more and more granular in detail. I also highly recommend Read Dead Redemption (and its standalone DLC, Undead Nightmare.)
