I haven't lived there in quite some time, but where I am now, I'm p. sure there's a hate group like down the road from my home + a sundown town.

Very. It's all pretty hush-hush until they think they're in like company.

No place is devoid of racism, and there's certainly more than a bit of kneejerk prejudice esp in the specific neighborhood I grew up in.

But, relative to a lot of other places, it's very good on that front.

Rural South Carolina town. Way less racism than the Oklahoma city I live in now and the NE cities I visited growing up.

Nothing overly malicious, just ignorant comments and casual racism. Thankfully.

Where I live now? More multicultural...more people...more obvious racism.

The town I was born in had a very large KKK presence and overall was very bad. Which is a large reason to why we moved, since my parents are a mixed race couple. I was just a baby, but apparently my mom got threatened on the street quite a few times.

The town I then really grew up in was not as bad as where I was born, but the racism was still there.

Apart from UKIP presence, not much.
On account of my old hometown, where Jeremy Clarkson is a resident of....

It's got a lot of minorities and the white people are mostly fairly liberal, but I've met a few racists. And once found someone had graffiti'd "shrine to Martin Luther King" on a portable outhouse in the park.

It is steeped in the type of racism I despise, but almost devoid of the type of racism I endorse.

Very, but certain places with names that begin with T would tell me I'm wrong, because the racism comes from the diversity of the place, so instead of just white people being racist you have a whole bunch of different races that are racist against each other.

One of the most multicultural cities in the world, so not tremendously.

Though that's not to say it's perfect by any means.

My hometown is full of people like my dad -- that really soft, obnoxious "I'm not racist, but" type as opposed to out and out Klansmen or whatever (though we do have our fair share of those, too...)

Not really. There's some stuff, but by and large it's not - possibly because it's one of the most diverse in the country [and no, not NYC. It's actually considered more diverse than that.]

I once heard someone scream out their car window at a group of black teenagers "Go back to the plantation!"

My middle school let the black kids get away with murder. Whites and Asians? Not so much.

Oddly, high school was pretty good race-wise. We had a black principal and he didn't take any shit from anyone and he gave everybody a fair shake.

Now, when I went away to grad school that's when the racism really came out. Ain't nobody racist like a bunch of white princess types away from NYC the first time...

I live in beautiful Portland, where folks are very progressive these days, but very bad at overcoming the deeply entrenched racism of the past. It's ground very deeply into the fabric of the city, so it doesn't show up in people's personal behavior much, but it's all through neighborhood patterns, cultural traditions, and demographics. And when I say deeply-entrenched, literally the first shit Oregon did when it got a provisional legislature was shit like this: http://start-wa.com/lash_law.html

In short, it's exactly the level of racism that current progressives really stink at engaging with, because you can't call anyone out for using the wrong word.

It's not the most awfully racist town ever, but there are ignorant comments and the kind of casual racism that's socially ingrained.

Not too bad, unless it's about the Romani. That's really the only thing people are really openly prejudiced/racist about, and it's kind of accepted to be as well.

There still is some racism towards black people and "the Muslims" (meaning for the most part Pakistanis), but it's not as open at least and not really accepted.

Super-Racist

Town I was born: my dad couldn't get a job because he was from the Middle East (this was in Western Europe)

Town I grew up: was threatened with a rifle by a neighbor after 9/11 and had dismembered animals left in front of our house (Appalachia, United States)

Typical Norwegian small town with an asylum*, a lot of ignorance, a lot of us/them mentality, but as a whole it could be a lot worse.

But as I mentioned here before, my family would have bigger issues with me dating an immigrant than dating someone of the same gender as myself.

*Wait is the word I want? Eh Immigrant housing while they wait for their applications for citizenship to go through,.

Lotta anti-Korean slurs and graffiti going on in my place, but that is to be expected given how many blacks we have around. They really go to town on the Koreans, the blacks.

Kind of racist towards natives in some parts. But if someone makes racist comments about any other race, complete strangers will tell them to go fuck themselves. It's very, very frowned upon.

So I guess the answer is ...not very?

Re: How racist is your hometown?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-25 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
My hometown was odd, because the majority of residents weren't white, but there was this very vocal KKK presence, and also a small group of Charles Manson followers who were living there because it was near the prison he's in. Those groups were really small and didn't speak for the majority of the community, but they were so vocal that it felt like a very racist atmosphere even when most people were actively shutting that mindset down.

My city is racist, yep, but on the opposite spectrum. And I will not argue how that "isn't" racism.

Hometown? A mix of liberal white NIMBY racism and bigots.

Where I live now? A culturally segregated majority-black city in the South. It's different.
