Honestly at this point, it's practically "Poe's Law" in effect everywhere you go. Because I could honest-to-God see someone, somewhere, genuinely believing something like this.

Considering I've seen people claim learning a language is appropriation I'd venture that it's way more than one person.

That's one of those ones where I'm like, "you guys really aren't thinking this through." There are only two outcomes if that line of reasoning were to be followed: 1) people of different cultures have great difficulty effectively communicating with one another, which would increase misunderstanding between them; or 2) people of less powerful cultures are forced to learn the language of the more powerful culture, which is...kind of part of the problem right now.

Learning someone else's language so that you can communicate on their terms is a good thing. There's generally a level of respect involved in it. The people who think it's insulting just...don't actually understand the things they claim to be fighting for and against at all.

True, but then half the time these are also the people who claim that a white person being in a relationship with someone who isn't is oppressing the non-white partner by...um. Existing, I guess. So expecting them to understand a complex issue might be putting more faith in them than is really reasonable, as mean as it is to say.

Yes, multiple times actually. I've seen people getting dog piled for daring to learn another language, - and that was a couple years ago that I started seeing that pop up.

What do people like this think honestly? If no one ever learned another language there would be no translations. So no literature outside your own culture/language. Why would anyone travel then if you'd never be able to get around. You could never move abroad. You could never speak to anyone outside your own language. Or is it just a thing where different cultures outside of American (namely white people) can learn languages, but people who are privileged couldn't? I'm not trying to troll here, just make sense of this. Because sometimes it just feels like the underlying desire with the radical SJW's is they do want segregation for thier cultures, belief systems, or orientation(s).

When I've seen it, it's been the privileged thing, native English-speakers shouldn't learn other languages because it's just another form of imperialism or colonialism or something. It's really stupid. It's like what someone said upthread about how that means underprivileged people have to learn the privileged language. It just winds up reinforcing the power structure. But most of the people I've seen say this are very young and usually they're second or third generation immigrants, so they're mad about things their parents faced and kinda latching onto ideas that seem empowering at first. I can kind of understand it but I hope as time goes on they realize it's not a sound idea.
