Did they actually say that or is your imaginary friend a "SJW boogeyman scapegoat"

Considering what is claimed these days as "cultural appropriation" these days, it could go either way.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh huh. I sniff the faintest hint of troll.

I don't think there's any way of knowing, which is what makes arguing on the Internet so fun.

I wouldn't call it fun. More like "frustrating." Because for every thing possible out there, there is someone who believes it. Seven billion people on the planet. There has to be at least one person who believes what the OP is saying. The question is, whether or not OP is telling the truth.

Yes, that might have been a bit sarcastic.

It's horribly frustrating especially when you get ferocious arguments between anonymous posters about whether or not, in their specific personal experience, it has ever been known to happen.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
There's no earthly way of knowing
If this is truely the way discourse if going

Is this supposed to be based on Willy Wonka or is it just my own brain hearing the first line in that tune?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Different anon

Oh, good, not just me then

(Anonymous) 2015-04-25 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
No, that was intentionally a Willy Wonka shout out.

Honestly at this point, it's practically "Poe's Law" in effect everywhere you go. Because I could honest-to-God see someone, somewhere, genuinely believing something like this.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Considering I've seen people claim learning a language is appropriation I'd venture that it's way more than one person.

[personal profile] a_potato 2015-04-25 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
That's one of those ones where I'm like, "you guys really aren't thinking this through." There are only two outcomes if that line of reasoning were to be followed: 1) people of different cultures have great difficulty effectively communicating with one another, which would increase misunderstanding between them; or 2) people of less powerful cultures are forced to learn the language of the more powerful culture, which is...kind of part of the problem right now.

Learning someone else's language so that you can communicate on their terms is a good thing. There's generally a level of respect involved in it. The people who think it's insulting just...don't actually understand the things they claim to be fighting for and against at all.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-25 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
True, but then half the time these are also the people who claim that a white person being in a relationship with someone who isn't is oppressing the non-white partner by...um. Existing, I guess. So expecting them to understand a complex issue might be putting more faith in them than is really reasonable, as mean as it is to say.

have you really? half the posts that people here cite as being examples of SJWs ~out of control~ are tumblr trolls using SJW terminology to troll the site and make everything "offensive"

(Anonymous) 2015-04-25 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT

Yes, multiple times actually. I've seen people getting dog piled for daring to learn another language, - and that was a couple years ago that I started seeing that pop up.

I've seen someone worry that celebrating their own culture might get them accused cultural appropriation.

[personal profile] a_potato 2015-04-25 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that just makes me sad.

[personal profile] blessezmoi 2015-04-25 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Im half black but was raised by white parents and have been given shit for attending Black events. Im not black enough to celebrate that part of my culture.

Yeah, I've seen that. I've also seen people accused of it for taking part in events they were invited to take part in.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-25 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Considering someone complained to me that going to a Highland Games is "cultural appropriation," yeah, you can get slammed with that.

*raises hand* I've been told it's cultural appropriation to celebrate my own culture because I'm "only" 1/8th Eastern Cherokee.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I wondered that too.
