I'm really confused about the 'noble savage' trope in regards to Pocahontas. It's racist because Pocahontas is a hero? Is in tune with nature and learns how to be in tune with people, too? I don't get it. All Disney princesses are Mary Sues to some extent.

I also can't say about the grandmother tree, but aren't tree spirits and such prevalent in Native American folklore? I get what you mean if you're pointing out that the magic only happens on the side of the Natives, but to be fair, the movie is really nature focused, and the white settlers are basically just interested in digging up and destroying it.

*sigh* You don't get it.

"Why is it so bad that black people are portrayed as liking fried chicken and being all spiritual? Isn't fried chicken delicious? Isn't being spiritual nice, and 'Swing Low, Sweet Chariot' is a beautiful hymn."

DA: No they are not the same and my native ass is going to smack yours for going there.

Okay. Not sure why you're insulted, but I guess you're entitled to make physical threats against someone you disagree with on the internet. It's a free country. They're asking why the "noble savage" trope is racist when it seems, in their view, to embody positive things like being in touch with nature. I tried to explain why the seemingly positive aspects don't make it not racist.

NAYRT. Thanks for the non-explanation.

Really. Anon just asked a question. There was no need to be snarky. :/

No I don't get it, so explain? An overused trope is not the same as racist. And her portrayal wasn't exactly arbitrary to the themes of the movie. And there is a full cast of other Native characters who are not portrayed as she is.
