I get what you mean if you're pointing out that the magic only happens on the side of the Natives, but to be fair, the movie is really nature focused, and the white settlers are basically just interested in digging up and destroying it.

John Smith was pretty generic. I always thought the minor characters were more believable and interesting.

So it's understandable that the Indians were romanticized as more Green. To a fair degree, they were, because their ancestors had gotten through their disasters and settled on a sustainable program long before.
