The tree wasn't so bad. Pocahontas being preachy and sanctimonious as fuck was bad. In the real world that would be a believable flaw she would have to work to get over. In the movie-land it was not presented as a flaw.

Also the Native Americans weren't really great environmentalists.

John Smith was pretty generic. I always thought the minor characters were more believable and interesting.

But yeah, the Indians weren't perfect. That said, the English land use ended up being far less sustainable for various reasons.

So it's understandable that the Indians were romanticized as more Green. To a fair degree, they were, because their ancestors had gotten through their disasters and settled on a sustainable program long before.
