Hmm.

1) While you are approaching this with realistic context of the attitudes of the time, the story of her life so far doesn't overlook that she has struggled to be taken seriously, so if it's adding improbable to the improbable, this very hypothetical version of events might have handled her story differently for sure but still could have very well ended with her successful. Also she and Steve weren't necessarily going to get married right away, so if she kept her personal life on the DL until she had her foot farther than the door somebody could have recognized her potential before her marital status became a problem.

2) The added hurdle would not have changed how independent or badass we know she is.

Note that I'm not blaming Peggy OR Steve for this.

It's just that...I think as Mrs.Rogers, Peggy wouldn't have been able to get even her limited job in Agent Carter. People wouldn't have accepted it, I think, and even if they didn't get married, their relationship would have been in the public eye because, I imagine, Steve himself would have been in the public eye.

And given the radio-show and the attitude of the time, I just think that being attached to Steve would have posed ENORMOUS problems for Peggy's professional life because everyone would be expecting her to drop of the workforce, get married, and pop out some kids.

And that would have closed A LOT of doors. Even more so than in Agent Carter, where she's single.
