I have trouble imagining them being together forever so yeah, even though their romance story is sad I also kind of like badass single Carter.

plus, not gay enough

nope.

I guess the question is, would the Howling Commandos have stayed together (to finish off HYDRA/Nazis/etc.) if Cap hadn't "died"? If so, they could have continued to go on adventures, with Peggy with them "officially" in a "wife" role, and unofficially in a spy role, or something similar.

Either that, or Steve could have through some weight around for her? I bet he would've, honestly.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I prefer to imagine them both just dropping out of the government service, and out of sight, and just traveling around having adventures and punching dickheads right in the goddamn jaw.

This is a lot more IC than OP's theory tbh.

Woops. Thanks.

OP

The issue I have with their relationship is that Steve is still in the military. And even after the war, I doubt the US government would let him go so easily (he'd be a huge rallying figure and then the Korean War happens in the 50s).

And, in universe, the world doesn't really accept Peggy's role as it is. When you look at the radio-show, she's portrayed as a helpless damsel in distress that Steve must save constantly.

Also, following the war, there was a HUGE pushback for women to "get back in the kitchen" because all the soldiers were coming home and needed jobs.

Steve would likely have been idealized and held up as a model -- and so I don't think people would have accepted that his wife worked or contributed outside the home because then it would set a back precedent for the women of America.

As to Peggy's reaction...well...I think it would have been extremely difficult for her to live like that. (I actually have some ideas of where that might lead but they sound so awful that I'm worried it would come across as character bashing).

I'd like to see them keep him there.

*drifts into fantasies about the US government imprisoning peggy and steve for not being willing to stay in the military. of course, they promptly escape from a maximum-security stockade to the Los Angeles underground, and, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune*

Steve would never have allowed that to happen. He wouldn't have just 'supported' her, he would have fought for her until the bitter end. Like, the idea of it ending up this way is massively OOC I think?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
OP

Yeah, but even with Steve fighting for her, he's not exactly going to be able to force people to do let her do things or respect her.

I think, weirdly, that him "dying" and leaving her single gave her far more independence than if they had stayed together.

I'm not blaming Steve for that, it's just that post-war, things would have been very different. And I don't know that Steve would have been able to convincingly argue a case when the situation had changed so much.

"toe" the line, OP.

Also, yeah, in the 1940s people would have been even more dismissive of her, saying only Captain American being practically a demigod in the Army and intelligence services is what kept her in a job in the SSR.

But maybe people would've have been so quick to believe Howard Stark was a traitor, though, and might've twigged to the rise of Leviathan sooner as well as the nascent threat of a resurgent Hydra.

er, I meant would NOT have been so quick.

Hmm.

1) While you are approaching this with realistic context of the attitudes of the time, the story of her life so far doesn't overlook that she has struggled to be taken seriously, so if it's adding improbable to the improbable, this very hypothetical version of events might have handled her story differently for sure but still could have very well ended with her successful. Also she and Steve weren't necessarily going to get married right away, so if she kept her personal life on the DL until she had her foot farther than the door somebody could have recognized her potential before her marital status became a problem.

2) The added hurdle would not have changed how independent or badass we know she is.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-25 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Note that I'm not blaming Peggy OR Steve for this.

It's just that...I think as Mrs.Rogers, Peggy wouldn't have been able to get even her limited job in Agent Carter. People wouldn't have accepted it, I think, and even if they didn't get married, their relationship would have been in the public eye because, I imagine, Steve himself would have been in the public eye.

And given the radio-show and the attitude of the time, I just think that being attached to Steve would have posed ENORMOUS problems for Peggy's professional life because everyone would be expecting her to drop of the workforce, get married, and pop out some kids.

And that would have closed A LOT of doors. Even more so than in Agent Carter, where she's single.

I don't know...I feel like Steve would've supported her no matter what and they would've found a way to make things work. Maybe their lives wouldn't always be completely ideal, but I do think they could've been happy. (Neither Steve or Peggy are the type to give up easily, so the two of them combined would be a force to be reckoned with.)

(Anonymous) 2015-04-25 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I agree that Steve would have supported her.

I guess I just don't think it would have succeeded all that well. I think that Peggy would have still found herself hopelessly limited and pushed to the side even more so than in Agent Carter. I think she and Steve would have done the best they could but I can't help but think that it would be immensely frustrating for Peggy to have to deal with this because everyone assumes she's going to get married and be a housewife.

And I think the US government would have a vested interest in keeping her at home. Steve is almost an ideal for the time. And the US government had a HUGE pushback for women to stop working and get back in the home following the war (so men could take the jobs). And I don't think they would have very easily tolerated Peggy's presence in the workforce.

I don't care whether it would have played out that way or not. I'm just finding that I'd really, really like to read a fic that went down this route.

Image: Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter

Text: I ship Steve and Peggy SO HARD. I love them both to death and ADORE the pariing. But I feel like a traitor because…I don’t think they would have been happy. Had steve not been frozen and if they had gotten married, I think Peggy’s opportunities as a wife would have been even more restricted than as a single woman (as seen in Agent Carter).

Steve would have been the “important” one and she would be expected to tow the line and be a good little wife.

I think he would try to support her but society at the time would severely limit her options.

I think she would have come to resent him and how the end of the war meant the loss of her independence.

I just can't imagine that.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-25 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
Steve doesn't like bullies and Peggy only goes with convention up to a point. Steve will disobey orders if he thinks they aren't right and he was perfectly willing to commit fraud just to join up. Peggy went against her own spy organization and that was only partly for Howard. I just don't see either of them "toeing the line" for very long.

This would be a great fic.
