The issue I have with their relationship is that Steve is still in the military. And even after the war, I doubt the US government would let him go so easily (he'd be a huge rallying figure and then the Korean War happens in the 50s).

And, in universe, the world doesn't really accept Peggy's role as it is. When you look at the radio-show, she's portrayed as a helpless damsel in distress that Steve must save constantly.

Also, following the war, there was a HUGE pushback for women to "get back in the kitchen" because all the soldiers were coming home and needed jobs.

Steve would likely have been idealized and held up as a model -- and so I don't think people would have accepted that his wife worked or contributed outside the home because then it would set a back precedent for the women of America.

As to Peggy's reaction...well...I think it would have been extremely difficult for her to live like that. (I actually have some ideas of where that might lead but they sound so awful that I'm worried it would come across as character bashing).

I'd like to see them keep him there.

*drifts into fantasies about the US government imprisoning peggy and steve for not being willing to stay in the military. of course, they promptly escape from a maximum-security stockade to the Los Angeles underground, and, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune*

Not by physical force necessarily. But I think there are MANY ways you could manipulate Steve "all I want is to serve my country" Rogers.

There's little doubt in my mind that he would have been a huge figure in Cold War, had he not disappeared.

Steve's not as easy to manipulate as all that, I don't think. He's a pretty smart guy.

Re: OP

It's not necessarily about intelligence so much as it is about emotional blackmail. Plus, I can see the US government arguing that Steve OWES them because they gave him his body through the serum. That he has a responsibility to the people of the United States due to the threat posed by the Soviet Union.

Re: OP

I don't think those are very good arguments and it's difficult for me to see Steve giving credence to them.

You think Steve Rogers is going to get caught up in some Red Scare bullshit?

"You think Steve Rogers is going to get caught up in some Red Scare bullshit?"

I don't think that Steve, personally, would ever hate/fear the Soviets. But I do think that the argument that he would need to stay in active service and be a rallying symbol for the people to look towards would be a persuasive argument.

And when the Korean War broke out (because I do imagine it occurs in the Marvel Universe), I don't think Steve would sit on the sidelines.

Don't forget that the Korean War broke out in 1950. World War II ended only 5 years earlier.

And he'd stay in the military between 1945 and 1950 because?

I don't think Steve would agree with the idea that he was morally required to stay in the military indefinitely.

Re: OP

I agree that Steve wouldn't necessarily want to stay indefinitely, but I think post-WWII was still a time of immense tensions. There's a reason the US shut the USSR out of the rebuilding of Japan, for instance. And the partitioning of Germany already showed the strain between the two countries.

I think that the military would have made a very good argument that the situation is very unstable and unsure. We basically jumped right into the Cold War and I think the military would have been very unwilling to let Steve dissociate himself from that.

I don't think your reading of the climate of the times is entirely right. I think there were certainly tensions, but I don't think there were enough for anyone to make a compelling argument to Steve that he'd have to stay in uniform. I also think Steve would think that he could do a lot of good outside of uniform.

To be honest it seems a lot more likely to me that Steve himself would be accused of communist affiliations.

OP

I very much doubt this if only because it would be a political/PR nightmare to have Captain America be accused of communist affiliations.

They'd probably watch him, might even suspect. But I really doubt they'd every publicly accuse him of such sympathies.

I didn't say publicly accused, but I absolutely think he'd be investigated.

And it depends on where he was at that moment in time and how much he had or hadn't pissed off the government at that point as to if they went public with it.

You know, there are a lot of comics about Steve during the Cold War, ie, the ones that were written between 1964 and 1990. Granted, he and Peggy aren't a couple in them, but we don't have to hypothesize about what a cold war version of Steve would have been like.

Re: OP

I think this would make a really interesting fic.

Re: OP

Same! I want to read something about Steve going up against McCarthyism. Or Steve getting accused of being a communist and the fallout and stuff.

And something something Winter Soldier appears somewhere in there. It would be pretty cool.
